Thank you Terri. Oil was my preferred medium back in the days. I am revisiting it now after an almost 30 year long break. I have been doing Ashleys course to remember it, and get back in the game. I would love to do that dog on black canvas that Ashley has made.

I do like your seahorse, @Elina - but if you aren’t too happy, then I would suggest working on the values. You could try colored pencils on top for more details and highlights. Derwent’s lightfast White does a great job in this, Luminance too, Polychromos White won’t work at all. Gouache might work best. Should you want to go very dark, you could use an ink pen like Staedtler. I would most likely use Derwent Lighfast Mars and Midnight Blacks for this.

You are doing so great!

Hi Elina,

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I usually use Derwent graphic as pencils, and I like them very much, but they can’t really represent the truely dark nuances. So I thought I would give these a try. They are said to be Professional grade pencils, and they are certainly very different from the Derwent and they don’t have a problem with the darks. I choose this reference, because it would provise ample oppurtunity to try out the darks. I can highly reccomend the pencils. They have a larger barrel and they are very lightweight and the lead is soft and smooth - so it is trikyer to get a sharp point. But I would definently recomend them.

Hi @siffermus

I’m just loving all your recent posts. The portrait is my favorite but I’m liking these watercolors also.

@siffermus Thank you for sharing! My favorites are the trees:heart_eyes:

It is so different to create depth and value with watercolor comparing to any pencil.

I just finished this guy or girl. First time trying to do an animal in pastels. I used Faber Castell Pitt Pastel, Sennelier Pastel pencils and Conté á Paris soft pastels on light grey Pastel Mat Board.

Hi Elina,

That sounds super interresting. Which pencils did you get? Are you going to do the dog?

@siffermus I will recieve some simple kalor pastel pencils to try the medium.

I do not know yet, if I will draw the dog:thinking:.

There is a picture oft a bird for a friend I would llke to draw with them…

I spent so much time in January working on the current Ink Drawing live lesson that I didn’t have time to do anything else. So now I’m back to drawing random things that I need for my local county fair (in August 2026).

These Calla Lilies are drawn with (Prismacolor & Polychromos) colored pencils on Rising Museum Board, from an on-line class from Jennifer Morrison Art.

I said I’d share when I began the picture I’m
going to enter in the fair this year, and here’s the beginning! I’m using the grid method, sketching on regular paper and then will do graphite transfer to my final paper, probably Arches watercolor. I’m scaling up by 1.5 so final piece will be just about 11x14. (Thank you, Terri @robichon for the good advice to reconsider 16x20!) I plan to do combine mediums of water color and colored pencil. Will post progress pics!
