I just finished this coloured pencil drawing and had a few questions I was hoping more experienced people could help with:
How accurate would you say it is on a scale of 1-10 (1=not accurate at all, 10=very accurate)?
What would you suggest as a good colour for shading shadows on skin? I used Polychromos walnut brown but not sure if it was a good option or if there are better colours?
Where am I going wrong with hair? I’ve watched a lot of the tutorials dedicated to hair and practiced a lot, so I tried to block in the main shadow areas here, but feel like I’m still not getting it correct, especially in the braided parts of this drawing. Can anyone advise on what I can do to improve? I’m at my wit’s end!
I feel like the lips in this drawing really let it down (in addition to the hair). Does anyone have any tips for drawing this section of a portrait?
I suggest you send this drawing to Matt for the “Members Minute” along with these questions. I believe there is a really good chance that he would critique it and address the questions.
By the way, I think you did a good job. Don’t be so hard on yourself and keep watching the lessons here and practicing.
I like it very much! Some of the shading is a little dark but skin tones are very hard to get right I think! Maybe practice on same kind of paper until you are happy with it and then add it to the piece?
I am impressed with the attitude you got in the subjects face… that is very good I think!
Yes let Matt critique it …I’m sure he’d help you out a lot!!
Thanks Terri, I tried another portrait and submitted it to the critique, I really hope it gets chosen. Is there any way to increase the chance it is selected? It’s certainly not on the same level as any of the other drawings I’ve seen in previous episodes!
Matt selects things at all skill levels, because he likes to critique things that he can TEACH with. You have to photograph it good enough for him to critique so that is the biggest criteria. He also likes to critique things from people who have not submitted before, so there is a high likelihood he will select your submission. Good luck.
Sometimes the next week, but could even be 6 months later. Depends on how many things are submitted and what appeals to him at that moment in time. Good luck I’ll be watching for it
