Hummingbird - 3 little birds couse

I didn’t have any black Mi-Teintes, so I painted a scrap piece of mat board with black gesso. I think I thinned the gesso a bit too much, but it’s a cheap way to practice. I haven’t decided which brand of colored pencil I prefer, so I’ll keep practicing until I figure it out.

This is amazing! Thank you for sharing!

Hi Laura, @Laura_Patton

Hi Laura,
What a clever idea to use black gesso on mat board; way to get creative with what you had! Even if it was thinned a bit, it worked well as a surface, and your hummingbird turned out beautifully. I really like the color choices and how delicate it feels. :bird::sparkles:

Experimenting with different colored pencil brands is such a great way to discover what suits your style best since it such a personal choice. Looking forward to seeing more of your practice pieces, you’re off to a lovely start!

I’ve been using a set of 36 Lyra colored pencils, and I also have a set of 36-Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils which are absolutely my favorite. I do want to give Prismacolors a shot eventually… but first, I just ordered the Winsor & Newton Artisan Water Mixable Oil Paint set.

I’ve officially had to make a personal rule: I must complete at least 10–15 pieces with a new medium before I’m allowed to buy more art supplies. Let’s just say my inner art-supply goblin is not thrilled with this arrangement. :joy: I haven’t circled back to purchase more colored pencils yet because I keep finding more fun things to try.

Looking forward to seeing what you create next as you explore more brands too! Have fun exploring!

Jess
