I tried another coloured pencil drawing, this time of a fox cub’s head/neck. Would love to hear any pointers/advice on how I could improve it in the future!
@jp101 Hello Jay,
I think you have done a nice job on this wolf portrait. Enlarging the picture I could better see the fur and it looks like fur, that is a good thing.
You may want to do a portrait like this showing a little more of the neck and even end it at the chest, just above the shoulder. I think that would help to show the change of values.
Value differences are really important. I always look at my reference photo and then at my artwork in black and white to see if the shadows are dark enough and the highlights light enough to make sure the full range shows up.. This helps to define the shape and position.
One other thing that I noticed, and that I also have done, is to make the whiskers too thick. Making them thinner ( as Matt told me) to look more like strands of hair.
One other thing taht Matt could say in one of his critiques is to be careful how close your artwork comes to the edge of the paper, there can be pull to certain areas and you want the eyes to see all of your work on any project.
I think you are really of to a great start and keep up the good work. Practice is what helps us to grow and improve the skills we need. I’m still learning as you are and the more I do the more I am okay with my progress.
If you are now a member I suggest to check out the weekly critique. This is one of my favorite parts of the membership..
Continue enjoying your art journey!

Thanks Teri for the really helpful response! On the point you make about vales, did you mean I should’ve made the dark patches even darker? Or did you mean I should introduce more dark tones in the rest of the lighter fur areas?
These are great! I Love them.
Hello Jay,
I think that you could decide where the light source is coming from and decide where the highlights should be and where the shadows should be.
Then you can decide if and where you could add highlights or enhance the shadows. You do have a full range of value. If you are a member what Matt says in the current critique would be really helpful.
Over all you did a really great job and it stands as is. I have just found that if I take a step away, even a couple of days and look at my artwork again then I can see how I can improve my own artwork.
You definitely are on the right track and I look forward to seeing more of your artwork. I don’t get on the forum to often but will definitely look out for your threads here.
