Here is a recent drawing of our toy poodle.
Been injured and tore some tendons in my fingers so slowly getting back to drawing.

I think - if you uploaded a reference, which we could compare it to, it would be easier to do feed back. It is looking really good. Lots of life and depth in the fur. Lovely expression in the face.

This is a good start. I’d recommend you work on refining your values, adding more darker mid-tones to better define the shape / form of the dog. Adding the shadows you can see in the reference photo would also be something I’d recommend. Thanks for sharing your artwork with us.

I find it easier to draw from a photo to and then I can keep editing it! Keep at it and work on the sparkle in the eyes…two spots in each eye I see and I’m not sure if you told us what kind of medium you used and paper?

Hi gknuck - I have put the images side by side, using my graphic designer program. It is something I like to do myself, as I feel it helps me alot with values. I totally agree with what Terri wrote - work more with the values. I think your propotions are really good. I think, for instance, the eyes could go darker, and the midtones on the for instance the body should be darker, and perhaps blend a bit with a tissue to soften it.

Thanks for sharing your art work with us. I do agree with Terri and Sys regarding the values. Following Matt’s lessons, value is probably the most important element of art. You can always get away with colors, but never with their values. For excample, if you drew your cute toy poodle in blues only, it would still be a drawing of a poodle.
Beside that … I do have a now 12 weeks old Standard Poodle puppy that will need to get it’s first fur cut. I would like to do it myself. How did you train your dog, since puppies won’t just sit, but easily lose their patience. Lol

Thank you for that, what a difference that makes seeing them side by side and the difference in the values.
Such as around each side of the nose down to the upper lip, (if they have lips…). I need to darken that as well to bring out the difference where the nose begins and ends and makes the jaws more prevalent and fade down more from the eyes. I will be going back and touch up the original.
Also @theresebriggs the medium was 50LB acid free white stock and Staedtler Mars Lumograph pencils.

Hi Buddy,
Kooper is 9 or 10 years old. We actually took him to a near by pet store and went through some training with the trainer. He did learn some new stuff, though not as much as we would like. 
He was a rescue dog, 5 1/2 lbs, then now 10 lbs.
Thank you for your suggestions too. I thought about doing it on black with white pencils but did not. I may re-do it that way along with all the suggestions.

Hi Gary, I would be happy to see your re-done or touched up drawing. My service dog Mari is about 8,5 years old. She was a rescue dog too, “planned” as a family dog and turned out highly intelligent. That’s why she is certified now. These dogs are special. My puppy Milka is from a breeder.
