This is a small drawing of a horse. I really liked the textures in the photograph as well as the shadows. I drew this with Pitt Polychrome Colored Pencils. I worked a little at a time totaling about 30 hours over the past couple months. It is a small drawing 5.5" x 7.5" on Strathmore multi-media paper.
Critiques are always welcome and thank you for taking a look.
Hi Teri, thank you for sharing your charming piece of artwork!
Yes, I myself love textures and shadows…come to think of it, they may be the real decisive factors for me to select what I draw. I usually draw black and white pieces, so no wonder I tend to be fascinated by these particular elements of artworks. Anyways, while I do love how you have handled the textures and shadow in this piece, I might consider adding a little bit more 3d feel to the shape of the horse, especially around the neck. Specifically, I would probably darken the bottom part of the neck to more clearly indicate the round shape. And I would make the wall on the left hand side darker, no matter how bright it actually is in your photo reference. This is to emphasize the contrast between the horse’s shiny soft fur and the wall.
Hope this helps, and again, thank you for sharing your wonderful drawing!
Yes, this helps and confirms what I was thinking. I was not sure about the lighting for the wall if it would look out of place by making it darker and you are correct, the wall was even lighter in the reference than I drew it.
I also agree about the neck. I was trying to figure out how to make it rounder, but I just had a light bulb moment on how to do it.
I always appreciate your suggestions. Thank you!
Hi Teri!
Nice portrait of this little horse. I don’t know if you have seen it yet, but Matt has picked it up in the Members Minute. Good critique!
Patricia.
Yes, I did see the critique and have some ideas on how to implicate Matt’s suggestions. As you know your opinions are always welcomed as well as suggestions.
