Colorless Stick 003 vs 121

Hello, newbie here. I am taking the Pastel course by the Instructor on Udemy. I see that a colorless stick for blending is recommended.

I am an American living in Brazil which has made my purchase of products a little more difficult than expected! Anywho, the question: I have found a colorless oil stick by Sennelier here but it is labeled “Medium 003” instead of “Transparent Medium #121

The seller says it is the same. Is this accurate?

I want to make extra sure since in the US the cost is about $6, but in Brazil because of taxes and fees it’s about $20 USD :frowning:

Hello @Learning4567

This is what I found on the internet. I was so curious about it! I copied and pasted the text:
Seems like the Oil stick 003 will harden in time as opposed to the oil Pastel transparent blender that will never dry. Seems like Both are transparent blenders with different properties.

“Sennelier oil sticks, like oil paints in a stick form, dry and harden, while Sennelier oil pastels, containing a non-drying oil, remain malleable and require sealing or framing.

Here’s a more detailed comparison:

Sennelier Oil Sticks:

  • Composition: Contain pure pigment, a drying oil, and a small amount of wax.
  • Drying: Dry and harden like traditional oil paints, though the process is slow.
  • Application: Can be used for sketching or creating complete oil paintings on traditional oil paint surfaces.
  • Blending: Creamy and blend well.
  • Surface Preparation: Require gesso preparation, similar to oil paints.
  • Sealing: Do not require sealing or framing, though oil paintings are generally varnished.
  • Format: Larger than typical oil pastels.

Sennelier Oil Pastels:

  • Composition: Contain pigment, wax, and a non-drying oil.
  • Drying: Remain malleable and do not dry or harden.
  • Application: Can be used on a variety of surfaces without preparation, including wood, paper, canvas, and metal.
  • Blending: Can be blended easily.
  • Surface Preparation: Do not require gesso preparation.
  • Sealing: Require sealing or framing to protect the artwork.
  • Format: Smaller and firmer than oil sticks.”

For some reason @Meme5, perhaps because of my usage of VPNs or the fact that I am out of the country, google is not as helpful and it does not give me the same recommendations for websites/answers it did when in the US. It’s a mixture of portuguese/location based answers blogs and then some English websites.

I think different countries allow for different amounts of international information?
Same thing has happened to me when trying to google arts/crafts products from Mexico. I am glad I was able to relay my search results to you, another advantage of having such varied geographic locations represented in here! :hugs:

You are such a kind and generous person, which I discovered some time ago. I learned a lot from what you just researched for someone else out of the goodness of your heart. I’m so glad to know you and call you my friend.
