Digital to Traditional art

Hi,

I’ve been working with digital art for a couple yrs now, but want to expand into traditional art.
I’m thinking colored pencils? Not sure if I want to get into paint…at least not yet.
Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Kent -

I suggest you go to YouTube and check out lessons on a site called . . . Gettin’ Sketchy. It is run by the instructors from The Virtual Instructor so it’s a great opportunity to see them teach and it is free to watch. Usually, they are on live at 5:30pm our time on Wednesday nights. They run for about 11 weeks and then take a break for a few weeks before starting another season. If you watch live you can participate in the chat box. You can also watch the recorded versions whenever you like.

They spend 45 minutes doing a sketch. They vary the media used so it’s a great opportunity for you to see what various media are like.

In response to your question, many beginning artists start with graphite or charcoal. That’s a great way to learn to draw, and most importantly teaches you to understand the importance of “value”, one of the 7 core elements of artwork. If you want to use color, then yes colored pencils are a good choice. Prismacolor Premier are a very good brand of colored pencils if you need to buy them. Check out Amazon or Blick Art Materials. One thing you should know about colored pencils is that they take longer when used properly, by creating a lot of layers. The paper you use also makes a HUGE difference.
