I’m a self taught digital artist who creates lifelike portraits of birds using Procreate on an iPad Air, with an Apple Pencil. I keep my toolkit simple—palette, brushes, smudge, and eraser—so the work feels as close to traditional painting as possible. I don’t trace or use grids; I’d rather rely on my own eye and develop my own techniques. When someone looks at my work, I want them to see the beauty of the bird—and a hint of me woven into it.
I was getting rather good at that technique when I realized I could only give prints and that most art contests said no digital works. Definitely a fun, portable technique.
Hi @Kent
Welcome to the forum. Nice to see you here. Did you become a member of The Virtual Instructor too?
Terri
Hey Terri! Good to see you again!
No I haven’t, I’m just gonna hang out for awhile. But when I met with the Curator at the Paramount, she recommended a book that will be coming tomorrow. It’s called
‘Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’. Check it out, if you don’t already have it, I ordered it on Amazon.
That is a great way of doing it. Love it.
Hello Kent,
First, welcome. I started my journey in the art word with birds also. At that time I did not know anything about a grid or composition or anything. I started with the eye and did what fit on the page.
Now that I have learned some things I am improving but still hold onto my style, I hope.
I do look forward to seeing some of your artwork. You will find that this is a friendly bundh and if you are a member and available Wednesday nights we would enjoy your joining in the classes. It will in pen and ink and a new one starts this Wednesday, 8pm EST.
I will keep an eye out to see some of your artwork. I am very hesitant to try anything digital but would enjoy seeing your artwork. I don’t get here much but will watch for your posts.
Teri (with 1r) There are many Teri, Terri, Theresa, etc. on the site. so I use my name like this.

Hi Kent.
