How to keep a soft pastel underpainting from curling up the paper, does anyone know?

soft pastel underpainting

Hi Freddy -

I always tape down all sides of my paper before I start anything and never have a problem with curling paper.

Hi,I’ve done that too but it always still seems to want to curl and even on multi-media paper suitable for watercolor

So I’m confused why you’re having so much of a problem with this. Soft pastel is typically a dry media where I see no paper distortion. Are you making it wet, and if so why? I’m just trying to understand.

My other question is … what is the weight of the paper you are using. If you are using a lot of water, you might need a heavier paper. 140 lb minimum for watercolor paper / but 300 lb hot press paper for more stability with water. But even that needs to have all the sides completely taped down edge to edge. If the paper swells up while being used it will go back to flat when it is dry.

One other surface you may want to try is Strathmore Mixed Media Board. It’s like thick smooth cardboard and its the only media where I’ve never seen distortion from water.

xYes, wet, alot of artists lay down color(pastel) and brush either alcohol or water over the pigment to create an underpainting and then start the painting with pastels over the underpainting. it creates a colorful “wash” if you will usually in a complimentary color
