Hi @rab3a99 -
I’ll tell you what I always tell myself. Make your lights lighter, and make your darks darker. That will give you a much better range of values.
I also suggest you make a point to watch the Members Minute every week. It takes less than half an hour and artists of all skill levels learn a lot. Matt talks a lot about value in these critiques.
Hope this is helpful. Happy drawing.

Hello! I like what you did with this - especially with pastel pencils. I am unfamiliar with the paper you selected, but if I may make a suggestion, I would opt for a different surface. You may want to consider Pastelmat. I am aware that it is more expensive than many papers out there, but I heard that it is wonderful for pastel pencil work. I agree with Terri Robichon… lights and darks pushed further will give better form to your subject by extending the range of values. Is the background the color of the paper or did you cover it with pastel pencil? In the top image, it looks like you had indicated the glow of the lamp, but in the final image that glow seems to be lost because the background is of the same color as the light itself. Of course, it is possible that you drew this from life. To help with the range of values, you can take the photo, and convert it to grayscale. You will then be able to see the areas of shadow and light more easily which should help you decide how far to push the values. If this is your first attempt at pastels, you did a great job. Best regards,
Patricia.
I used a light yellow paper color, and that was a mistake; I should have used gray paper as I mentioned. I will redraw it using the gray paper color. I’ll order the type of paper you mentioned because I love drawing with pastels. Thank you for your feedback!
Thank you very much lenetg137
I agree with your feedback, but I was afraid the wood details would disappear, so I didn’t add too much dark color.
I would love to see the results of this subject on a gray paper. Thanks for sharing your art with us.
