Oil Pastel Course - Black Eyed Susans

This is my first attempt at oil pastels, here is my black-eyed susans from Matt’s Oil Pastels Course. I’m enjoying this course.

Question - I only have a set of 24 oil pastels, what should I do if I don’t have the colours mentioned in the lesson?

Hi @avmrook - happy to have you as a new participant at The Virtual Instructor Community. The black-eyed susans are quite nice and I’m so glad you shared your work with us.

There are two possible solutions to your question about your limited set of 24 colors. First, just grab the color that is closest to what Matt is using. He often says it doesn’t have to be the exact thing because many people use different brands and the colors have different names. Second, if you want a more precise color match, experiment with using layered colors so that they mix to get the color you desire. It’s a wonderful way to learn. Hope this helps.

Thanks Terri. I’m looking into adding more colours to my oil pastel palette as I really enjoy this medium. Mungyo is the brand recommended to me which is more affordable than sennelier, so I might try that.

Hi @avmrook -

I’ve only used oil pastels a few times, but also really enjoy them. You may want to look into the Sakura Cray-Pas Expressionist Oil Pastels. Matt often uses this brand and they were the first one I purchased. I just looked at dickblick.com and a set of 50 is just $22.14 (that’s the one I have). If you go this way, don’t forget to get the extender/blender which can be purchased separately for 81 cents.

I just looked at Mungyo at Blick also and it’s about the same price as the Cray-pas but I have no experience with that one. However, it looks like both these brands would be good options to consider. The one thing about the Mungyo is that in addition to the set of 48 for $21.41 they also offer a set of 72 for $47.28 And for $119.80 you can get a set of 120 in a wooden box. Decisions, decisions, what to do?

Have fun as you continue to learn with these.
