I just finished the Oil Pastel Course on the Virtual Instructor. i really enjoyed and now see how much more practice I need. Maybe, if you have not done this course it will inspire you to try it out.
I found that oil pastels are bulky but forgiving. Also the quality of oil pastels matters, at least in my case.
Though Matt did the forms in blue, I didn’t have the cool grey anymore so I did this one on warm grey paper since red is a warmer color.
The Sky painting/drawing was the most difficult for me. Sky’s with clouds and I don’t get along - lol! so I did this one twice. The first one I was leaning to all cool colors, red - blue - mostly purples.
The second one I do like better and considered doing it a third time, maybe in the future.
I also found the portrait difficult. I didn’t have the same color paper so went with the color that Matt told me and used goldenrod. the colors turned warmer and at first I thought I would need to do it again, but when it was finished I was okay with it.
Dear, thank you so much for not only sharing your art WORK, but your learning experiences following along the course.
Oil pastels are still waiting in my virtual shopping cart. Your pastels are looking great! Which Brand did you use? If you used different brands, what were the differences?
I do like the red forms very much.
Did you just mix red & white?
The sun flowers do remind me of my latest vacation, were we celebrated my husband’s birthday with a pot of sunflowers on the table. I took it back home to bloom on the balcony now. So, thank you for prolonging the summer season with your lovely sun flowers.
I am currently working on the soft pastel course and have been struggling with clouds a lot. Yours are great and I think, it’s always a good idea to revisit a lesson or practice more. I would be happy, sitting in the grasy land whatching the sun going down.
You are great in portraits! I can’t imagine how you did it with these bulky oil pastel sticks. Larger paper? What is goldenrod?
It was fun going through and reviewing the course. Next I will work on the Pastel Landscape course.
The basic forms are using red, black and white. I used so Gamsol odorless oil thinner to give a mood to the background. It is truly odorless.
The portrait is 8x10” and Matt did a great job teach this portrait. But I also watch the module multiple times before I started it and while I worked on it. In my case, practice is important.
And yes those gorgeous clouds we see in the sky just cannot be interpreted, at least by me but as Matt says, practice practice and practice!!!
Will check out the pastel course but I think I saw the rocks. I am looking forward to the next one you add.
