Prismacolor set arrangement logic?

A gee whiz question but it might have utility in my educational process. I just bought a Prismacolor collection of color pencils and as I was loading them into a holder I was trying to figure out how they were arranged in the trays. They are not arranged in a ROYGBVI order, neither are they arranged by pencil number. So, what is the logic? I dont see a “warm-cool” or “complimentary” relationship either. So, what nuance of color theory am I missing? Or is it simply a manufacturing/packaging efficiency?

Hi Dave @Dave -
Congrats on your new art supplies.

Don’t get hung up on the order. When you start taking them out and using them they will never get back in the original order. So I have mine arranged by color. Hope that helps.

Thanks…not wrapped around the axle about it, just curious if there is a color theory thing I am missing. Like you i will move them to reflect shades of progression… unless prismacolor is trying to teach me something!

Meanwhile anyone know a good coloring book supplier…not Big A.

Hello @robichon,

I have several brands of color pencils mixed together. Like Terri I have them sorted out by color regardless of order they came in.
I do however, have made my own color charts by brand and order they came in for my reference purposes.
I hope this helps.

A few years back I watched this video on YouTube where the host, Claire, puts the colours in order of colour family. I more or less keep mine in this order.

Thanks, this looks useful although I think the link in the video is out of date (I could not find the multi page file she was working with. I did find the single page version.) At this point I think it best for me to explore my own organization as I use the pencils. But I am still curious if there is rhyme or reason for how Prismacolor sets them up. I will note that I found Sara Renae (Clark?)'s Color Category catalog pdf’s very useful.
