Last summer when I was not sure what I was doing I did this cafe’ in soft pastels. I use cheap pastels to “try them out” and am now hooked on both soft and oil pastels. Ashley’s version turned out much better.

No laughing here @TLP , the style is absolutely beautiful! You should frame it!
That looks great! No laughing ever from me. I am going to do it soon and I’ll post it on this link
Thank you MustardSeedLife. I appreciate your encouragement.
June.
I look forward to seeing yours! Thank you for your kindness!
Teri
Teri, that’s beautiful! Pastels (soft and pencils) are one of my favorite mediums to work with. Great job! I’m finding that The Virtual Instructor and the skills I’m learning and honing have turned into the best therapy I could ask for. I have fairly significant anxiety and depression, and since I started drawing again in July (using TVI) I’ve had fewer difficulties than I have in a long time. The pandemic has been hard, and coming out of it is just as hard, I think. Art is now my therapy, and I can’t wait to draw something every day. Thanks for being part of this group and for sharing your work and yourself.
Brenda,
Thank you. I too am finding that soft and oil pastels are close to the top, but I must admit that I’ve tried a lot of the mediums that Matt and Ashley teach on the Virtual Instructor and am really enjoying all of them.
The VI for me is therapy too, like you said. And the simple lessons and encouragement to be our own artists is helpful too. We can be ourselves and develop our own styles.
The opportunity to learn so many different mediums really helps me to concentrate and depending on how I am doing and what is going on I can choose the appropriate medium, so I find myself in the middle of many, many projects at one time.
Again, thank you for your kind words in regard to this artwork and I look forward to seeing some of your work.
Teri
What? No laughing alloud. It looks great! Good job!
That looks great! I like how you expanded on it for a wide format and translated the sign to English.
I followed the same path from Getting Sketchy to a membership here. Lots of things to learn and enough lessons to easily keep somebody busy for a year working a couple hours a day. I didn’t do the Cafe one yet, I don’t have markers so I think I’ll try it using Prismacolor NuPastels. They’re kind of like harder pastels or soft woodless colored pencils and I’ve done a few things with them that turned out OK but not amazing (as they say: “It’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian” when it comes to accuracy/quality of work)
Wren07,
Thank you. I appreciate your encouragement and humor.
Teri
Thank you ThatOtherGuy,
I think that having the photo reference you could do this in any medium. It would look nice in graphite, charcoal, line and wash, colored pencils, and any type of pastel, soft, hard, or even the oil pastels.
Like you said, it’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian, and each one of us as individuals will render our artwork as we interpret it to our own style and presentation. I hope that sentence makes sense.
I hope that you post it here when you finish it so we can all enjoy what you come up with.
Teri
I’ll get to it eventually! Going to have to miss class this week.
I wont be there either. Will miss y’all!
Brenda
Wow! It won’t be the same with both of you out of class. You will both be missed!!
Teri
Thank you so much, Teri! We’ll be picking our son and his family up at the Houston Airport. They’re flying in for early holiday/my birthday celebration. I tried to figure out how to work everything in, including the live class, but just can’t make it work. I will watch later. I will really miss being there.
Brenda,
When is your birthday? Mine is also in December, the 26th
Teri
Hi Teri! It’s tomorrow, the 14th! I’m concerned our big plans have been compromised. I talked to my son earlier today, and they think two of them may have the flu. Crossing my fingers until I hear from them in the morning. If they don’t come, I’ll be at the online class tomorrow night.
December birthdays are a mixed bag! Especially one the day after Christmas!
Brenda
I am going to be decorating 4 dozen cookies! So I guess I am still doing something artistic - lol. See you both next week
Happy Birthday Brenda!
Have fun, June! We will miss you for sure.
