@Meme5 Yes, from what I understand the Mungyo Gallery are a good affordable firmer oil pastel. I’ve only tried those (multiple times) and tried from receiving things and other people’s stash the Paul Reubens Hayia ones and one Sennelier. I think it’s a fun medium, but I have more fun with my neocolor 2: they are not as messy and the fact that you can activate them with water gives you other options. I know there are options with oil pastels as well, but I find water-related mediums more fun and versatile. here I’m focusing more on the pen and ink, the soft pastels, the drawing lessons since I need to improve my technical skills and some watercolor.
That being said, I’ve recently checked Lena Rivo’s art and she does magnificent oil pastel paintings (and gouache), full of light and very vibrant. It’s very inspiring!

Thx Sonia, I found the on Amazon with an elegant wooden case for only $42.00 and there are 72 colors…going to give them a try with our Portrait of Reynold! Good price for sure. I’ll let you know how it compares to Sennelier’s!

Hi Terri, Found the Euro Blend Charcoal Primo on Amazon for $9.99 three different black 59P-BP and one white too.

I have these conte pencils instead of sticks. I found them in an art supply store in El Paso, Texas a couple of years ago, i just checked amazon and Found a set of them.

Think the pencil would be easier to get details in than the crayons.
Haven’t used any conte’s yet but will have to try some day.

No wonder they wear out by time another hour goes by!
Here is my finished 5x7 Jack Hammer drawing from Gettin’ Sketchy on Sept 16, 2026. It took me 3 hours, instead of the 45 minutes that Ashley had. This photo is a little lighter than my artwork. My paper was Canson Mi-Teintes / color sand and it think it is darker than what Ashley used. That meant I had to do more work on the background to lighten up the sky and sidewalk. I had fun with this one.

When I saw and printed the reference photo, I showed it to my husband and told him that Ashley would be drawing that in the lesson tonight in 45 minutes. Jim couldn’t believe that was possible, but Ashley did it and so did I with a lot more time.

Here’s my Jack Hammer Working Matt, I mean Man haha
My lone scrap piece of canson miteintes tan/brown paper had a scribble on the smooth side so I had to use the textured side, which it doesn’t really matter other than the texture showing more. It was super fun!

That turned out great!!! I thought it was fun too and not as difficult as I thought it would be when I first saw the reference.
Sure hope others give it a try and post there results here. It is okay to spend more time on it than Ashley did.
