I didn’t see any topic on this and I wanted to share what I was able to do today on the first episode of season 17. It helps to have all the constraints of GS for time, medium and subject, and I can just focus on practicing my skills.
Will try to post what I make from future episodes as well.

What paper did you use?

I used a cheap pastel paper by Somime. It’s sanded by I feel like it doesn’t accept a lot of layers… I am also extremely heavy handed 
I got it as a practice paper as I do not have the means to paint on pastel mat… and I’m not as big fan of doing soft pastel on mi teintes. Because I’m heavy handed…
So this is what 15 minutes, the “Wrong” material and non collaborative pets produce! Not too mad about the face, especially since i never do people - not my thing.

Hi @SarahP and other forum friends. I worked on mine while listening to the Live Lesson that followed Gettin Sketchy. So spent about an hour. Used Strathmore Artagain black drawing paper. My favorite white charcoal pencil is different than Matt’s. I like one from General Pencil Company called - PRIMO, Blanco charcoal 59-W.

@robichon That’s beautiful! I use the same white charcoal as Matt and I’ve been happy with it. I didn’t have the right type of paper. I don’t have black watercolour paper so I tried to prime some very smooth mixed media paper with transparent gesso. It was not transparent at all… then i decided to go for a sanded black paper but i couldn’t erase anything, it was leaving marks. One my cats was walking all over it too Learned a lot though, which is the point!!
I did my scary getting sketchy twice. First (bottom one) on my sketch book, the second one (top) on black watercolor paper

Hi @SarahP
If you’re using any black paper with charcoal or pastel, I see no reason to use gesso. I’d only use gesso for acrylic or oil paint.

The black paper I used was very smooth, like a smooth Bristol, It wouldn’t grab onto the pastel/chalk.
@Meme5 That’s really nice! I love the touch of purple in the rind and how we see a bit of the orange glow on the table/surface.
I haven’t done last week’s sketch yet… I will! But in the meantime, here are my tomatoes. I made them with gallery mungo oil pastels. They are not the softest and so I had issues with the highlight (should have left some empty space there), but they are find for what I want to do with oil pastels. Which is not much
I actually didn’t like either paper of my attempts for white charcoal. I prefer toned tan, toned grey, or artagain. It was still fun to do though.

They are so good! Well done, i have been watching the Mungyo for a long while but haven’t gotten those. However the Meeden brand just launched some oil pastels that the algorithm brought to my attention on YouTube. Those are the oil pastels I used on my tomatoes. They actually are creamy and easy to blend compared to others also very reasonably priced for practice or actual art work.
