Hi I’m new to the virtual instructor course. I have a question. I would like to know if anyone can tell me where I can find reference photos to paint and maybe sell. I dont want to do anything that would be illegal. Thank you Kitrob
Hello Kit.
The best place to find reference photos is to go to Pixabay.com
These are royalty free photos to use anytime. You have to make an account to download photos and there are options to communicate with the person who shares their photographs for us to use.
Welcome to the Virtual Instructure,
Teri
Thank you for the information .
Hello, I am Brenda and I Love Drawing and Painting… more on the Realistic side.
I have used many mediums and I love continual learning about them and the tools to use.
I am originally self taught, but with the internet… I have found tutorials and tips to help me with my work.
— I found Virtual Instructor to be of Great Help.
I also Thank the Lord for the Ability to do so.
Nice Meeting ALL of You…

Hello Brenda,
Welcome to the VI. I too really enjoy painting and drawing and like you am self-taught, The VI instructor, Matt and Ashley have taught me so many things that I did not even know. If you are a member, you will find the critiques and Live lessons extremely helpful. I went back and watched every live lesson and critique and also.
Matt really makes everyone feel like family and at the live lessons you can ask art related questions to Matt and Ashley and get help from the members in the chat as well.
I do hope you will post some of your artwork. You will find that this is a very encouraging and help forum.
I also thank my Lord Jesus for giving me the ability to draw and paint almost instantly when I became disabled with Neurological Lyme Disease in 2013. It has not only been a coping mechanism on this long journey but how I have now a network of people in the Lyme community and art community that have become good friends.
Again, welcome to the Virtual Instructor community.
Teri

Hi Kitrob! Welcome aboard. Pixabay is a great resource. Always check the profile of the contributor just to make sure that you are welcome to use their photos. You may want to look into becoming part of the Facebook groups: Landscape reference photos for artists and Free Reference Photos for artists. Both those groups have people who post their photos offering them to artists as inspiration. Some of the photos are from artists themselves who offer them to other artists. Just be careful that you pick photos that states “I took this photo myself and you are welcome to use it” or some similar statement. Even when people post photographs on Pixabay or the Facebook group, you may want to always keep the name of the contributor (no matter where you get the photo) to ensure that you can give them credit as a thank you.

Hi everyone, I’m Ellen and I just joined this morning. I am just outside Austin Texas and my favorite mediums are pastel, oil and mixed media. I currently work out of my home studio. I’m not a beginner, I’ve been an artist for quite some time but I am always looking to up my skills and learn new things and meet other artists too. I’m looking forward to exploring all this group has to offer.
Hello Ellen @shey23 , nice to have you here. There is lots of interesting art work here and a valuable place to pick up ideas in this forum as well as through the Virtual Instructor lessons and critiques. Looking forward to seeing some of your work!.

Hello Ellen,
Welcome to the Virtual Instructor. There are many seasoned artist here who are still learning new things through all of Matt’s lessons. As Lenet said one of the places I have learned the most is the weekly critiques that come out on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Tonight is the last lesson of this current live lesson. It starts at 8 pm EST in watercolors. Matt will announce what the next lesson will be so can get ready.
If you go to the blog, you can find all the getting sketchy and free lessons from YouTube. All the live lessons are available back to 20013 when they first started.
Again welcome, and btw I am not a seasoned artist, but we all help each other out so your experience as an artist is very welcome. I hope you can make it to the live lesson. We are a small, friendly group, like a family.
Teri
Hello Ellen -
I’d call myself an intermediate level artist, but don’t sell anything I create. Great to have you here. I’ve been a member at the virtual instructor for just over 2 years and the weekly member’s minute/critique and the Live Lessons are by far my favorite (as already stated by others).
The way you will get the most out of the forum is by commenting when others post, and posting things yourself. We love to see “in process” posts as well as finished pieces.

Hi everyone! My name is Dave and I live in Massachusetts. As a child I used to paint in oils with my Mom. I am now 75 and looking forward to getting back in Oils, Pastels and Oil Pastels.
Hi Dave and welcome to the forum at The Virtual Instructor. The large variety and quality of lessons offered here are amazing and I’m sure you are going to love it. I don’t know how much you’ve looked at the site, but I’d highly recommend that you set aside a half an hour a week to watch the Members Minute / Critique. It is one of my favorite things and you will learn a lot by watching (no matter what media you plan to focus on). There are several years of previous critiques that you can watch too.
All the people in the Community are very kind and supportive. We look forward to having you join in on the conversations and post some of your artwork.
