What do you think if I leave out some of the details of the church to simplify the drawing. The grid is one of the areas I need to work on, I use transferring way to much for my level as an learning artist.
I’ve not finished many projects because of difficulty with the grid. I can’t even imagine something so detailed in a smaller format.
Your help and encouragement is always so helpful. Thank you for being a wonderful teachers aid for all of us. Encouraging and teaching.
I’m like the Eveready Energizer Battery on this project. I just keep going and going on it. I’m comfortable with the Zebra pens and it’s easier to keep the momentum going. I’ve been working on the trees on the right side now and making good progress. I’ll post again next week.
I can totally understand you wanting to get more practice by drawing with the grid, but if you want my two cents worth, this is a really complex advanced project that just screams to trace it to have a good starting point. Maybe an easier project would be better for using a grid. But this is totally up to you.
Regarding the amount of detail it’s up to each artist to decide how precise they want to be. Precision is my preference so I’m actually making my drawing larger to accomplish that. The smaller the drawing, the less detail.
Hope this helps. You can do this. Just take your time with it.
This one is the best in show here so the fair it’s definitely getting it. I am so under the weather medicated, ears buzzing, space staring, you get the idea lol…no beginning drawing or tracing is happening today only materials gathered. I will just keep my eyes open for the progress y’all make while I return to earth.
This is where I’m at after 32 hours. Pretty close to halfway done. I’m getting excited to see how this is coming along. Hope you enjoy seeing my progress and I ask you to share yours as you work on it over the next several weeks.
June, i am less than you. The grid and I are in a game of arm wrestling - lol i worked a few hours on it yesterday and did more erasing than drawing - oh my
I too am going to keep going forward. I will just be turning in my assignment a little late.
Hi Teri, if you have a problem with making a grid, what if you try to transfer the grid? I am understanding from your post that the problem is with the grid itself? If you are used to transferring, would it be possible for you to try to transfer the grid onto your paper and then just continue with the drawing?
Hopefully, I am not completely “off topic” here.
Anyway, good luck with your project.
Here’s my sloppy sketch. I used a prismacolor alcohol marker on the darkest spots. Since the zebra pens come in a set of 10 which I own, I grabbed three at a time to scribble some trees’ areas and the vertical lines for the willows on the bottom I didn’t use the square inch grid but instead divided it into 9 rectangles, screenshot it then lazily used that as my template grid on my 9x12 paper. I did not pay attention to the class since I saw followed the lesson after the 9 squares then after the fact noticed Matt’s sketch is smaller scale
Anyway, here’s my sketch and my transfer tracing with grid. P.S We’ve been fighting some upper/lower respiratory virus in my household, I am the last one of the three of us to catch it, hence my sloppiness and shortcuts especially on sketch.
Oh and here’s my transferring image to which I added the grid at the same time i traced it so I won’t get so lost afterwards. Also I went over the it directly with light pressure of the Zebra pen … right or wrong, I’m learning a lot already
Hi Sonia. So happy to see you embracing this new live lesson. Now the fun begins as you start applying ink to the official drawing. Keep posting your progress.
What the heck, seems like it’s time to post my latest status. I have worked on this now for about 45 hours. Currently working on the tree in the lower left side, but it’s not done yet.
I most likely would have used a transfer but feel that an 8 x 11 would be too small and I do need to practice the grid.
I have the grid drawn okay. It is the structure of the cathedral/church that is challenging now. I need the challenge and am taking it slow - slow and steady wins the race, right?
Thanks for your suggestion, I appreciate it. I hope that you are diving into this one too!
My two plus hours of work, Not including the time spent on transfer and tracing. I mixed the zebra and the Uni Jestream Edge 0.28 overlapping layers since the color of each, even if black, they are different black (fastest I ever had anything delivered) wish me luck as I continue
I am still thinking about it. The paper I have is 7 x 10, so even a bit smaller than yours . On the other side, I would say that the most important is to make some marks and get some experience :).
I guess I am just a little scared and need to push myself . But thanks for the encouragement! If I jump in, I will post it.
Meanwhile, I wish you good luck with your process, I will be around to see your next post
