Hi @Lucy

YOU CAN DO THIS. So just jump in now and see what happens because I know for sure that you can’t do it if you don’t even try.

Terri

PS this is me giving you that needed push.

Haha, thank you for additional push, Terri! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The grid has been drawn :flexed_biceps: , I will post when some marks will join the paper :).

Hi Sonia @Meme5

I think the only way to do this project is slowly. What you have accomplished so far looks great. Keep going and posting. It will help others to go on this journey with us.

Hi @Creativejan

It’s the current live lesson called Pen and Ink Architecture. Advanced level, but I think everyone should jump in and give it their best. That’s how we learn.

Terri

I totally agree with that . I always feel if you don’t try something you will never learn . I am getting more comfortable trying things out of my comfort zone. This group and Matt’s wonderful teaching and the encouragement of the fellow artists on here as well . Thank you Terri I will check it out .

Hi Sonia @Meme5

Congratulations on the progress. It truly looks great.

Which pen are you using?

Thank you, I appreciate your kind comment. I have been using the zebra for this last post. It’s turning up better than I thought it woud considering that my preliminary sketch was awful.

Hi Sonia

Since your initial sketch was “preliminary “ it doesn’t really matter how good it was. Clearly you are taking your time with this drawing, and it looks like you are totally in control of the pen now.

Terri

I’ve got my grid drawn and started doing the pencil sketch of the upper left area. I got bogged down with trying to define too much detail (which is me…) then I rewatched the live lesson and realized I just needed to define the areas of different color levels. It’s great that many are tackling this project because it’s a real challenge! I’m looking forward to seeing your continuing progress drawings and I’ll share mine as well. I do need to do some practice sketching with the zebra pens though to understand how the layering develops different graytones.

Hi @DaveK

So nice to see you post your progress. Regarding practice with the Zebra pen, know that how much pressure you apply makes a big difference, making it possible to obtain marks so light (if you want that) so that they are hardly visible. Sometimes I also make a point to hold the pen further away from the point. This reinforces the making of lighter marks and also may use the side of the tip of the pen instead of the top of the tip (if that makes any sense). The other thing is that this is just like other media. If you have dark values, don’t try to get them dark enough in one pass. You’ll just be applying too much pressure and denting the paper. So do layer on layer on layer.

Have fun, Terri

Hi everyone. It took 6 more hours since my last post to finally finish the tree on the lower left. It took a lot of layers to get all those darks, and I had to frequently prop it up and walk back to look and analyze, always finding areas where more adjustments were needed. So that’s 52 hours so far on the project and I’m so excited by how cool it looks. A difficult by satisfying project. Fun to be challenged in this way.

I’m going back to do more work on the lower left side of the building now.

One more comment / tip: I have found having the numbered grid on the tape on all sides of my drawing has been really helpful. Often, I can just eyeball it with the reference photo to figure out where I’m working, or I can selectively redraw a light grid on small sections where I want to work next.

Hello all,

Today, while I was walking European streets, I saw this church and thought about this lesson! It looked so familiar, but at the same time I knew it was not the same. Even after one second looking at the big middle circle, I recognized it had some different details and was impressed that just because I did one fast sketch of the lesson 1, I could picked up some details.

I watched lesson 2 where there was a discussion of that little part, that it might be a rooster, so I can confirm, I saw it today and yes, there was a rooster.

Anyway, I thought I would share…
