Live Lesson - Pen & Ink Architecture

I’m still in the graphite sketching phase of this and was excited about a detail I added this morning until I sat back and realized the mistake I’d made… then I laughed and cried a bit (gotta keep a sense of humor in artwork) Can you see it in this image?

This looks great! I’ve been watching Matt’s tutorials on drawing trees in advance of doing this class. Hopefully I can do a decent job.

Hi friends. After a total of 64 hours now, I am proud to say that the building is done. So what’s left? More trees (ick). Keep drawing and posting everyone.

Hi @PeterV

I’m sure you’ll do great if you take your time and keep an eye on the reference photo. I look forward to you posting photos of your progress.

Terri

Hi @Dave

I had to look long and hard to find the goof. Your tree on the left side of the drawing between 6 and 7 inches from the top is too wide and eliminates the space for the back of the building on that side. No big deal. No body will know that something has been excluded. Just keep going because it is NOT a fatal error. Just say you were using “artistic license” to deviate from the photo.

Hi Sonia @Meme5

You are making GREAT progress and doing a good job as well. Keep going girl.

Lots of necessary interruptions in between but altogether about three hours or so.

Hi all,
I started my sketch with a pencil, and this is where I am right now:

As my paper is smaller ( 7x10 inch), I had to make the squares smaller, and I left out the last row (half square), in order not to go even smaller with all the other squares.
I must say it is not easy to draw  . Hopefully, after a little break, I will have energy to dive in and continue
Good luck everybody, all posts look great and are an inspiration!

Hahaha, yes everything is variable from the reference photo a bit, but the Where’s Waldo item is the lion structure on the middle left of the building… I put it on the wrong column

Hi @Lucy

So glad that you’ve joined the rest of us on this project. Indeed it is very overwhelming when you first look at it but proceed with just one square at a time and you’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish. And that makes you a winner !!!

By the way, what you have done so far looks good.

Hi @DaveK

WOW you are making great progress. Isn’t it amazing that when you can find a several hour block of time, you get in a groove and accomplish so much more than stopping and starting.

Hi Dave

I’ve probably spent more time working on this than anyone else in the group, and I didn’t see your “where’s waldo” mistake. Happily, it looks like you caught the mistake early enough and have now corrected it. Congratulations.

Thanks Terri! I will try to remember focusing only on one square at time. I am learning on the way how to squeeze all the details in the little space of a square, maybe at the end I will know what is important to include and what can be left out.

Anyway, I am very curious about the pen itself, but before that, some few hours of pencil are ahead of me :).

Great work!!! Your ability to capture correct details from the reference is amazing. Then to lay it down with such detail is a tribute to your skill, patience and dedication. I am constantly humbled looking at your work… keep it up!

Hi Lucy -

When you get to playing with the Zebra - Rubber 80 oil-based ballpoint pen, remember a HUGE SECRET is to try various amounts of pressure. With very light pressure and holding the pen further from the tip you can use it like a pencil and get VERY LIGHT shading. It’s really incredible to do this with a ballpoint pen.

Another tip is that to get the really dark values, it is best to do that by applying several layers, versus trying to get really dark all at once.

Thanks so much Dave for those kind words. I will tell you that one of my secrets to success is that I ALWAYS trace my initial drawing. I try to create several pieces of artwork a year and tracing saves time so I can focus on the finished drawing. That way I also never make that Where’s Waldo mistake. For me, tracing the initial sketch just makes the entire process more accurate and more satisfying.

Thanks Terri! Appreciate the tips! I will keep it in mind and hopefully successfully apply. It is very nice of you to give me heads up, because for the darker value I would probably just “press more”.:grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: I will really try to be patient and apply it in layers.

Thanks again!

Hello everybody,

I did some more drawing yesterday, and I am almost done with my sketch. I am hoping to add more details when working with a pen.

I am going to watch a lesson and observe how it is done :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
