I like this a lot. I think it looks really good on the toned paper!
Thank you for your supportive words. It made me frustrated to not listen to myself to carry on with the semi “painterly” look that watercolor pencils produce. I have a hard time not covering the loose strokes that show through, hence the overworking. It’s just not satisfying, nor easy to appreciate looser paintings/drawings………yet……

Terri @robichon,
Look at that gliding beaver. Just wonderful! I can’t recall if it’s your own photo reference?

A little closer to completing my Lemons Bouquet. I am really taking my time with this one so I don’t get lost in the mass of leaves’ details.

This picture is amazing … the beaver swims and look at me… so realistic!
Beautiful photorealistic… Smelling the lemons
Hi Sonia @Meme5
I totally understand not being comfortable creating your own looser drawings and paintings. You know I’m totally in the realism category too. One of the ones I goofed up was also using watercolor pencils. I haven’t had much practice with them yet.
Regarding the beaver, yes this was drawn from my own reference. It was swimming back and forth along the shoreline of my property. It was also one of the references that Maki included in her drawing that Matt critiqued.
I’m in awe of those beautiful lemons. Take your time. I bet it will end up being one of your favorite drawings. I know I love it.
Terri
Hello Sonia @Meme5 , those lemons are looking great. So far your “subject lighting” is looking consistent. Don’t lose that focus and it will be awsome!

Getting Sketchy “Sunset Beach Drawing with Pastels” I can’t believe I brought soft pastels to work.
It’s done on black 9x6 Canson Velvet pastel
paper with Mungyo Artists’ Soft pastels

Terri @robichon you continue to impress and amaze. Thank you for sharing your wonderful art.
Sonia @Meme5 I want to pick one of those lemons, squeeze it to make my morning cup of warm water and lemon. Beautiful bouquet.

Well let me jump back in. The arch and steps done with graphite, clouds are done with vine & stick charcoal, the runner is done in carbon. Please feel free to critique or comment.
This challenged me, there are many erasure marks that I had to hide.
Thank you

Hi James @1kidneyJD
This drawing is so interesting. So, my questions are where did the idea come from and did you use any reference photos for parts of it. I guess 2 more questions: what size is it and what paper did you use.
I would love it if you would send this to Matt for the weekly critique.
Terri Robichon
Hello Terri @robichon, the thought of finishing the race snuck into my mind. I looked for heavenly references which is the arch, steps, & clouds. I needed a runner which is the second reference photo. The paper is Master’s Touch Bristol vellum. The drawing is 9 3/4 inch L & 6 inch W. I am honored that you think this is worthy of sending to Matt, have to think about that.

Terri @robichon,
Thank you for taking the time to reply. Watercolor anything , while getting a feel of it more, still is different to figure out and accept the looser look that I create. I must stick to the lesson without deviating until I get used to the natural watercolor markings and hopefully evolve to a more refined style. At this point in my limited watercolor experience even using the more controlled watercolor pencils is more sloppy than loose. I will definitely keep practicing because I do love the medium.
Also, I cannot understand the importance of producing painterly vs realistic art.

Lenet @lenetg137,
Thank you for your kind words. I’m hoping to not get impatient with the last few leaves. Then all the retouches. The vase wll be faster I hope.
Sonia Alonzo
Hello James @1kidneyJD,
That is quite a creative beautiful original piece you created! I also hope you send it for a critique. Thank you for sharing it with us!
Sonia Alonzo
Thank you Sonia. I reckon I will for next week.
Hi Sonia @Meme5
Actually I think painterly isn’t necessarily better, it’s just a different approach. Either approach when well done is good. It’s personal preference.
At the fair I have watched people who will spend far more time in awe looking at realism. I think my heart will always prefer creating that way.
Terri
Hi Sonia -
Every time I think something will be quicker, it isn’t. I bet that vase will take more time than you think.
Terri
Oh my goodness, Terri! You pottery hands is absolutely amazing and breathtaking.
How do you do that???
