Thanks for your kind words

Hi everyone -

The drawing of a lotus flower is done. Just as a reminder, it is 8 x 10 on black Canson - Velvet paper.

The previous photos of this project were taken with my cell phone. When they are finished, like this one, I scan them.

@Elina,

I am so impressed by your tomatoes painting, very well done!
I painted those tomatoes and made a big mess lol, it was a very challenging project for me. You have good control of watercolor!

Oh, thank you! This tomatoes quite funny for me…yes, a challenge, especially to stay friendly with myself and in the end I am fine with the result… definitely learned a lot again.

… and already not sure how to handle the rest of this course without Markers…:thinking:maybe I will use Gouache and ordinary colored pens like kids use (have some for my young guests)

Hi all

Thought I would try something completely new. Never used oil pastels before so chose to try the live lesson “Fall Landscape” Matt did a couple of years ago. I deviated quite a bit, mainly watching snippits of lessons when I got stuck.
I used:
Strathmore Pastel paper 9x12.
Artecho Oil Pastels (Inexpensive but I think ok).
Quite please considering it is my first attempt but I found it hard not being able to get fine details with oil pastels.
All comments appreciated.

Hi Sue @snookypooky

Great job. I have not done this one yet, maybe someday. I have not done much with oil pastels, because getting those details is really tough with this media. I told my husband it’s like drawing with lipstick. No kidding.

Hi Terri @robichon
Drawing with lipstick is a very good description of working with oil pastels . Very frustrating when you are trying to add detail and the oil pastel mark ends up about an inch off target! Although its not going to be top of my list for art materials I will give it another go at some point when I’m feeling patient and not likely to have a temper tantrum and throw the pastels out the window. I do like the vibrant colours.

Your Lotus flower is amazing :+1:

Hi Sue. I haven’t done that particular lesson but I did a couple of the other oil pastel lessons a year or two ago. Oil pastel is one of my favorite media. All that being said, I use oil pastel in a very different way from how I’ve seen Matt or Ashley use it. I lay down pastel, blend and layer, repeat, repeat, repeat, until I get to the top layer which I may or may not blend depending on what I’m going for. I haven’t seen our teachers here blend except for the blending that occurs with layering. Not saying one way is better, just that there are different ways to use the media. For fine details I either reserve parts of the paper untouched by oil pastel and use colored pencil in those spots or scrape away oil pastel and use colored pencil in the scraped away area. Another option is to dip a rigger brush in baby oil or another solvent and run it over an oil pastel stick to pick up pigment and then use the rigger brush to make detailed marks. I can see how oil pastel could feel frustrating for folks who favor high degrees of detail in their work. But I really like how your piece turned out.

Hi Nan,

I am not sure, if I understand your red spotted art work, but do ĺike the figure painting very much. Are you a member of TVI? If so, I would sent it in for a member’s critique. We don’t see abstract art very often - hmmmm - don’t remember to have seen this style at all in critiques.

Thank you very much for sharing your art with us,
Buddy

It is so pretty and well done!! I like all the details and the reflection on the water. I haven’t done this one either even though I have seen it many many many times. It’s just so much to choose from here at TVI! I will some day in the not too far future because my oil pastels are the least used of my art supplies, and acrylics, and ink. As a matter of fact I’ve never given ink a try! :upside_down_face:

Hi Buddy
Thanks so much for your comments. It’s always nice to get feedback.
I’m not sure I understand the red spotted painting either :joy:, I was just playing with paint, colour. different ways of putting on the paint, and making marks.
Yes, I’m a member, thanks for your suggestion. I’ll see how to go about that.
Have a lovely day.

Hi there,
Here are some acrylic value studies I’ve done recently.
The landscape is A4 on 250gsm paper in my art journal.
The plant is on 12 x 12 x 1/4" birch plywood board.
The child is on 12 x 12 x 1/4" birch plywood board, and was a photocopy of a photograph glued onto the board and painted over using black and white paints: an exercise to learn to resolve values by trying to stay on the extreme ends of the value scale, using as few midtones as possible.
Comments and critique welcome.
Have a lovely day.
Regards, Nan.

Hi Sonia @Meme5

It’s interesting that the media I love the most, you have yet to try.

My oil pastels are also only slightly used.
