What colors for a black lab in colored pencils?

I’m brand new to art lessons and I think colored pencils are going to be my preferred medium. I really want to make a portrait of my black lab. I’m looking for what recommendations you might use for his fur. I’m amazed by the “magic” of mixing colors. Obviously some black will be used (or maybe not?), but it seems like there’s way more to it. From what I’ve seen in making shadows, other colors are blended to create a more natural black. What colors would you use for the darker tones of his fur? I’m thinking some darker grays and maybe dark browns and probably more but would love your input. Thanks!

Randy, yes that would make a nice portrait. I use Prismacolor pencils along with Prisma clear blenders. they blend nicely. You could use some black but I would recommend blending blues and browns to match the colors in the fur and a couple percentages of grays for the values. I’m no expert Randy, just my two cents. Thanks for posting your project, Ron

Hello Randy,@RandMarsh

First welcome to The Virtual Instructor forum.

I really enjoy colored pencils. I am an odd ball because I prefer to use Faber-Castell Polychromo colored pencils with a terpenoid solvent.

I also recommend using black and brown and if you need a little lighter black you can use paynes grey. Depending on other colors in the background you can also add purples or greens. You will want to use cooler colors in the shadows and warmer in the highlights.

I did a project with a black dog in it and it is on the critique if you are a member. It is #481 in color pencils. I did this one without solvents.

Best to you as you go forward with your project. I look forward to seeing your progress and finished portrait.

If you are a member I encourage you to look at the critiques. They are a wonderful learning tool as well as the colored pencil courses.

Matt is an excellent teacher and there is so much we can learn from him if we take advantage of all of the tools he offers.

Also, on Wednesdays there is a live class where you can ask questions and and Matt and is friend Ashley will answer your questions via chat. the group is inviting and friendly.

Enjoy your endeavors into the world or art!
