Where to start?

Hi,

I’m still in my trial membership. I want to focus this year on really getting good with graphite then to pen and ink. I’m a little lost on where to start. Is there is a spefic order I should follow on the videos? Start with courses? And just randomly watch the classes, techniques, lives, you tube getting sketchy and critques?

Also is there a Facebook group or is everything done in the forum for members to communicate and share w each other?

Hi Tia @Tgad1

Welcome to the forum and The Virtual Instructor. It is a great place for people who want to improve their art - and is perfect for all skill levels.

Let me answer your last question first. The forum - where you are at right now is the only place where members can interact. No Facebook. You will like it here because it is very supportive and a positive place. You are encouraged to share your art, whether it’s something you’re working on or already completed. If you want advice for how to improve, you have to ask us for that. It is also great if you would comment on others posts as well. With some time and interaction we become good friends.

Regarding suggestions, I think you should watch the Members Minute/Critique every week (and maybe some of the older critiques too). They are less than 1/2 hour long and everyone learns something from all of them.

The advantage of watching the Live Lessons/classes when it is LIVE on Wednesday evenings, is that there is a chat box and you can ask any art related question you may have. (Feel free to ask questions on the forum too.)

I’ve been drawing / painting for several years so I pick lessons based on what project I like or what I want to learn.

Maybe for you, Matt just sent out an e-mail that a class that is best for Beginners is - 25 Days to Better Drawings. Check it out.

Hope this helps. Happy New Year!!!

The site itself has all kinds of art work that Matt and Ashley. As far as I know Matt is not on Facebook… He does have live videos on various kinds of art work. You could go to the site.
