These are my efforts on the current Mondays with Matt live class on acrylics. I struggle with the fast drying time, which keeps me from pre-mixing different colors for use in the paintings. Happy to have critiques and shared experiences with the class.

Hi everyone. I did the value scale, but then decided I really wanted some lighter values to better match the reference photo. I also decided to do mine in blue. I’m not crazy about pink.

Terri, what a great idea to use the sketch book to juxtapose the value study opposite the painting! I am beginning to think the format you are showing here is a strength for acrylics and their short drying time.

Hi Forum friends - I started work on the “acrylic pear” today and put in about 5 hours so far. It’s in my little art journal which has heavy watercolor paper and painting is 4x6. I started by adding clear gesso to the paper. Here is what my process looks like. Watercolor is one of my first loves, so I applied some on my watercolor techniques (which vary somewhat from Matt’s lessons). Not done yet, but I like seeing when others post what they are working on before it’s done.

thanks for sharing. I enjoy to see the process before it’s all done as well. 
Did you apply gesso with a brush? Did you do anything after that or you just let it dry and paint directly on it?
I am asking because I bought gesso recently but haven’t use it yet.

Yes, I applied (clear) gesso with a brush, making sure to get it nice and smooth. Then just started painting away. When I previously tried painting on the watercolor paper with no Gesso, I was having problems with how absorbent the paper was behaving.
It is okay to add come paint (color) to the Gesso also before using it.

Thank you for your kind remarks, Sonia! I have never used acrylic paints before, so I am enjoying the class for all of the beginner learning. Lots of great suggestions on the forum for surfaces and techniques.

At long last I sat myself down and finished the acrylic pear.
Just a quick “eye” update. First cataract surgery on my left eye was earlier this month and went well. Still using drops and have occasional blurry vision which will probably remain until the other eye is done - next surgery on my right eye is scheduled for Sept 23rd. Already can see a huge difference in the colors I’m seeing.

Glad you are having the cataract surgery! I did it a few years ago and wished I put in the maximum surgery on the lens replacement. But did not go well with my right eye which I did for distance (did Myopic repair) ! Was under Dr’s care for a year trying to get it to be right but still now after 5 years it can’t even be repaired to 20-20- with glasses. But with the bare eye (no glasses) see up close the best!
Life and it’s challenges …Right?!
Did mine on canvas panels and canvas 5 x 7’s.

Blurry eye and all your art is not suffering one bit. I am glad you can tell the difference it makes having had your surgery done. I hope your next one goes smoothly especially now that you know what to expect.

So sad your cataract surgery was such a big disappointment. For some people the more expensive lenses are not the best selection based on a number of considerations. My eyes were pretty good so decided that since you can’t redo it, and eyes are so important, it was worth spending the extra money. I’m just glad I could afford it.

Terri, nicely done, and thank you for the insights into your process! I understand the clear Gesso has some texture to it. Is that correct? Obviously it doesn’t affect your acrylic painting. Also, can it be tinted to create a transparent underpainting? Just curious.
