Cornell Lab of Ornithology online watercolor class

WIP!!! I did a Live 2.5 hour watercolor lesson online today. The subject matter is a Kingfisher. I certainly didn’t finish! Thankfully, the recorded video will be available for three months, and I plan to finish and/or redo the painting completely. Watercolor is far and away my weakest skill. This particular piece, which is just the start, still needs much work on the twig, lots of added value in the form of shadows, finished feet, and a smaller brush! The instructor used only a #12 round brush, and I found my smaller details were not pretty! I want to redo it with smaller brushes and take more time. However, watercolor is one of the skills I want to hone, and there is no way to do that except to start. So, I’ve started. I’ll also utilize some of Matt’s lessons on TVI. Please be kind and gentle. LOL!

I really do kinda hate my finished kingfisher. I’ve learned heaps from this process. The main thing I’m taking away is that I need to do TVI watercolor and line and wash courses. I need more practice with washes especially. But I’m convinced I can do it with lots more practice.

If I look at it tomorrow and feel differently, I’ll post it. Ugh.

I wanna see! I love what youve done so far, how bad could it be?

Ok, ok! I “gave up” by the time I got to the twig, just gave it a wash and some ink.

It doesn’t look too bad from a distance.

Wren, thanks for helping me see it’s not as bad as I thought last night. LOL!

Thanks, Linda! I may do it again to see if I really did learn something on this first effort.

It looks great! I have found that letting my attempts sit for a day or two make them look better! lol

Thank you, June. I also find if I look at it as if someone else did it, that helps some, too.

Its not bad at all Brenda! So dramatic. I actually love ot a lot! The colors blend together beautifully and your stokes are so controlled and flowy, you didnt do “too much”. Great job!

Thank you Wren!!! Yes, I’m the drama sometimes! LOL! I’ve had the kingfisher prominently displayed in my work area, and I am more fond of her every time I see her! Thank you for your comments!
