Reaching back in time to an episode that was four years ago.
My first experience with white charcoal on black paper. I don’t have black charcoal paper or Mi-Teintes so I did this on the Fabriano Black Black which is one of my favorite papers. I had forgotten though that you can’t erase well without leaving a mark on this paper so there was a bit of a struggle. I also had a lot of difficulty photographing it as the camera exaggerated the contrast and no amount of adjustment seemed to help.
I loved doing this and learned a lot about how white charcoal performs. It will be great to try another white on black with a paper that lends better to blending and erasing. A great value study. And good study of the structures on a horse. I did not complete the background as I am running out of drawing time because school starts next week for me so I want to explore as much as possible before then.
Once again, I obviously did not complete this in 45 minutes. Those 45 minutes seem to translate into an entire day for me. But I’m trying to study in depth for now until I get the hang of all the new media and order more art supplies. I’ll have to loosen up and hopefully speed it up later.
Very nice horse Traci…His values and shape make him look so real!
When I did this one, I remember my drawing resemble many sketches of a horse’s head I did when I was a child. Couldn’t quite get that out of the photo for some reason…
I grew up with a horse since age 9 until just a few years ago and turned out perfect timing for my horse of 24 years to go to heavenly pasture cuz I no longer could lift 90 lb bails of hay and my boys were tired of lifting them too!
(Had to store 2 tons for one horse for the winter!!)
Thank you so much @theresebriggs. The drawing is a bit brighter in person as I had difficulty photographing it. I have not ridden in a long time but still have all my tack. I miss it a lot but perhaps one day again I’ll have horses. I won’t be lifting more than a flake of hay at a time but I’d find a way to manage.
