Hi my name is Kim/Wattlebees I am a absolute beginner and at 64 never really knew how to draw.
I started with the Virtual Instructor 2 weeks ago watching the videos. I don’t have a lot of money to purchase the expensive pencils. can you use low cost pencils instead of * Caran D’Ache Luminance Colored Pencils.
I did do my first pencil drawing of the Rhino in one of the classes, but think it not very good and hopefully I can learn more so I can improve.

Hello @Wattlebees! Welcome to The Virtual Instructor forums! WHOA! That rhino! The texture is REALLY good, and you said that you used low cost pencils? I don’t know much about pencil types to help you in that department, but I can’t wait to see what you create next! Jesus loves you!!!

Hi Thank you for the warm welcome.
I did so a second drawing of my friends horse as my second drawing.
watching Matt in the class/lessons has been remarkable and so many techniques.
I’d like to improve as I haven’t drawn things like this, just basic kid drawings when I was at school.
I’d love to see some of your work.

Whoa! That one is impressive as well! I’m notoriously known to myself, as not being able to draw horses, here’s the most recent one I’ve done of a cartoon horse from a movie. And the bottom photo is one I just finished up today. She’s a character as well. Practice creates progress and improvement!

Wattlebees, WOW :star_struck:!!! That rhino is beautiful! You are doing great. I don’t know the answers to your question. But I’m sure someone here does. Welcome to the group! Looks like you’ll go far!

Those are super cute! Love the whimsical horse. Great job!

Wattlebees, I didn’t do horses well either until I started the grid method. It made a huge difference. You’ll be great and give yourself some room to grow.

Greetings from Texas. I see Emily is also a Texan. Howdy neighbor. Like a lot of artists I always showed some talent but only after I retired have I been able to take it seriously. After 3 years I’ve gotten better and sold a few pieces in local gallery. You can learn a lot from online classes but I’m looking for honest feedback on my art. I hope I can receive that here- and give the same in return. :face_with_raised_eyebrow::grin:

Hi Kim! I think you did a great job with the rhino. It wasn’t an easy drawing to begin with. As for the Colored pencils, you will often find Prismacolor Premier for sale at a much lower cost than Caran D’Ache. They are very good pencils. I have a set of 48 (since I do not have a big budget either). That should get you through most drawings. By the way, the nice thing about Prismacolor Premier is that you can usually buy singles. The 48 pencil set is a little short on greys, but you could supplement by buying singles (both warm and cold greys). You do not say where you live, but if you are in the US, you should be able to get the Prismacolors at a decent price (approx. $45 to $57.) Compared to Caran d’Ache which sells $110 for a set of 40.

I started with Virtual Instructor a few years ago. I am 63 years old and, like you I never really knew that I could draw. I haven’t made as much progress as I wanted because I do not devote enough time to art. But I did produce a few pieces that I am proud of.

Welcome aboard.

Patricia.

Hi,
I’m Jamie. After a long career I’m headed toward retirement. My main artistic outlet has been B/W photography over the years (film & dark room), but I’ve fooled around with graphite sketching my whole life and must admit I’ve learned quite a few new tricks in Matt’s graphite module. Chuckling, I have to admit I was caught off guard by the NC pronunciation of “drawing”. (…yankee me)
I’m especially excited to embark on ink and wash techniques and just water color painting in general. I’ve always admired it.
We’ll see if I ever muster the nerve to submit anything for critique. But even if that never happens, I really look forward to focusing on something completely new and creating some new sort of mess.

Hello @Jamie2022! Now I’m curious, what is the NC pronunciation of “drawing”? :upside_down_face: You’re definitely at a good place to learn, and I do hope you share your work. We are a very supportive community! Jesus loves you!!!

Hello Kim,

I too am on a very low budget, disability due to Neurological Lyme disease. I found a colored pencil I like much more than Prismacolor at Blick Art Supplies. I have them both and I bought each of them a few at a time. I will work with Prismacolor and find myself going back to Blick’s brand, but it is all personal preference.

Blick’s is also cheaper and can be purchased at less than a $1 for single pencils. It may be worth a try. They also have really good prices on most art supplies. I compare between, them and Amazon and usually they are cheaper and yes, they also sell Prismacolor for singles too, and not the difference in price.is not much.

I hope that this helps you as well as Patricia’s suggestions. I too have learned soooo much from all of Matt’s courses. I have two graphite courses left to work my way through, realistic drawing and I am working on Portrait drawing the right way. We look forward to seeing some of your artwork soon!

Welcome!

Teri

I have received great honest feedback here. I have only been a member for 9 months and have not regretted a moment of my time here on the forum or with the classes Matt and Ashley teach.

Best to your artistic endeavours.

How about “dra-Wing” if I had to try but I’m sure I’m not capturing it. Up here the w is silent (like the p in baby)

I never realized there were that many pronunciations

Hi, I’m Lenora - I need someone to come to Georgia, USA to kick start me into working with the 24 Days to a Better Drawing or the other one that needs to be done to get my artwork back to where it was 50+ years ago when I was in Art School or 55+ years since having private art lessons. I am so rusty it hurts and I have what they refer to as ‘essential tremors’ which can be horrible at times. I’ve got to find something I can do that isn’t difficult to work on, I get very frustrated with this. I’d like for someone to slap me into next week so I will feel it and get motivated, I’ve been here almost 2 years and have only posted twice of artwork I did in the long ago past.
