Oil Pastels Wednesday’s Live class with Matt and Ashley

@theresebriggs I changed the name of the topic as you asked.

Now it should say what you wanted. Hope it helps.

Thank you and God Bless YOU Lucy!!
Well done! Now maybe some others will add there painting of Reynolds?

worked on face some more and changed it a bit. And did the hair on the right side of her face too. Tried the new suggested oil pastels(munglo) but like the sennlier best for blending! But munglo has a really nice wooden box to store them in!

Added a little more red to face and hands and added more freckles too!

Hi @theresebriggs

What great progress with a difficult media. So glad you’re showing us as you keep working on it.

Here’s with some of the jumper in here and little more graphite getting ready for the blouse next! This is so fun and I’m enjoying pastels more and more! ::slight_smile:

This is the nice box when ordering Mungyo oil pastels …they are pretty similar to the ones Matt first used(Cray-Pas) before Sennelier’s. And being new have nice flat ends for making little lines…like we need for the necklace and jumper too!
Not nearly as expensive too so that’s a plus!

Hi @theresebriggs

As you have already started, would you say this selection would be enough? Or it’s better to get a bigger one with more colors?

I don’t have much experience with pastels so I don’t know at all how much you can blend and so on…

Lucy

I bought the light package of facial colors at last to get the lightness of the features on the face .
Sennelier are expensive but blend the best of all three I’ve tried! (Amazon)

Lucy this is what I bought after I only had the basic 12 colors to begin with!

This is the oil pastel tooI I like to use the best. I ordered softer ones, but this firm one seems to work best for me. It came in another paint set I had for long time before I learned what it was for! So, I can’t tell you where it came from?

Thanks @theresebriggs for all the tips!

Tomorrow will be the final class on Matt’s daughter Reynolds with Oil Pastels…I’m still trying to darken the right hand side of the ivy because after last week I realized it was too light and distracting from the facial being the main emphasis.

Will need to find a large frame and matting for this one. But it has been so challenging and fun to learn more about this medium!

Hi @theresebriggs

I’m so impressed by your drawing. It is difficult to obtain details with oil pastels and you’ve nailed it. It has been fun to see your progress as you’ve worked on it too. Thanks for all that you share and how willing you are to comment on the work of other members.

Thanks Terri …long ways to go still cuz we have a one- hour class left and my leaves are far from dark enough on the right side of picture. But your words are very kind, and I love putting my two cents in on everyone’s work! Been great being part of the Forum Family!

Therese you have done a great job with this complicated portrait and medium! That lesson has been difficult for me to follow along on because of the details but mostly because of its size. So happy to see yours near completion, thank you for sharing!

Been bedridden with Hypermobility Disorder complications brought on by serious family crisis, please remember me in your prayers, I need God now more than ever. I did manage to finish my 5" x 7" watercolor painting of Reynolds called “In an Ivy League of Her Own” apart from a few tweaks. For scale, the facial features all fit under a quarter sized coin.
