Favorite medium

What is everyone’s favorite medium and why . And how long have you been doing that medium?

My favorite medium is actually two together. I really enjoy putting oil pastels on top of gouache. I like this because the gouache gives an underlayer of intense color and then I can put even more intense color on top with oil pastel and blend, push, scrape and even melt and dissolve the oil pastels to achieve all kinds of effects. I’ve only been doing this for a few months. Here’s an example:

I do not have a favourite medium. Most experienced with graphite… and in January 2025 I started using, different types of colored pencils… a bit later watercolor pencils… and in between I tried out guache, watercolor, wax crayons and pastel pencils.
It helps much to listen and follow a teacher like Matt to learn to handle this and create pictures like you want to let them look like…. And of course training!

So nice of you to start this thread. I started drawing fairly recently. Two years and counting. I love telling anybody any chance I get that my absolute favorite medium is none other than Soft Pastels, in any form I can get: sticks, pencils, pan; it just feels great to draw with them! My super closest second is colored pencils, then graphite and charcoal. which I started using all those about close to two years.
If I ever get good at oil, acrylic, or watercolor, one of them will get right up there next to my love for soft pastels. My dream is to make a huge clouds painting in wet media. Not happening yet but hopefully in the near future.
Which is your favorite?

Hi Jan @Creativejan

For a very long time my favorite media was watercolor. I first used it for a couple of my classes in college in the 1970’s. I have a degree in interior design. But it wasn’t until the 1990’s when I had a little more time to paint.

Retiring in 2012 gave me more time to explore my creative side. I also have a passion for photography and scrapbooking. Then when I joined TVI in October 2021 I was able to actually be taught how to draw and paint, instead of just fumbling my way along on my own (long before there was a YouTube and on-line classes).

Now, I think my all-time favorite medium is INK, because it is so versatile, and still has some of the same capabilities of watercolors (my first love). Matt did a Members Minute on two of my most favorite INK drawings/paintings from the last year. I’ll post them here. See how different they are from each other.
