I would just like to get people’s opinions about becoming an illustrator in the design industry and if it is a good choice or something that should just remain as a hobby?

It’s definitely a career path. If it’s something you love, then you should run after it! Are you talking about digital or traditional mediums?
I would check out Visual Arts Passage program if you are VERY interested in being an illustrator. You can get a portfolio review and talk to John about their programs. They are affordable and will get you ready for the industry.
