Landscape Painting with Oils 🤗 Live Class Jan-Feb, 2025

Here is how far I have gotten. Sky and mountains done and working on the trees. Everything below the trees is just a preliminary watercolor underpainting to help me to visually map out where the colors are located.

Hi Sonia -

Just a comment to help you out - hope that’s okay. The stream of water needs to continue to the left between the trees in the background, otherwise there would not be the flow needed to create the rough water highlights. It kind of looks like a little lake right now. Take a look at Jane’s drawing and I think you will see what I’m talking about.

Today I lightened the slope of the mountain because I needed better contrast with the trees in the foreground. Then I worked on the trees. I don’t really like landscapes, and I don’t really like oil painting. Maybe just because I think both are really difficult.

Hell all,

Jane, I really like your finished painting. You did a really nice job.

Sonia, yours is coming along nicely. Terri’s recommendation I will take to use on mine too. I enjoy seeing the process as you work on this landscape.

Terri, as always your progress is going along nicely. Mine is coming along. I’ll take a picture and post. As it is well known mine NEVER turn out anything like the artwork Matt or Ashley does.

Mine is not quite done, but getting closer. Kind of in the very ugly stage, but I will finish it

Hi Sonia -

Not ugly at all. I’m going to work on mine more today. Hope to see you on the PeeWee live lesson tonight.

I spent most of my day painting rocks. Still a lot to do on this one.

I’m determined to finish this one. After several more hours, the water has been completed (using the wet in wet technique, so I didn’t have to wait for it to dry). I also got a lot done on the rocks on the right side. That is the part that I still need to finish. I’m proud of myself for sticking with this one and am pretty happy with my progress. Looking at Ashley’s finished painting has been helpful.

Hello All,

I finally figured out why I could not transfer photos, but i am not sure how.

Here is where I am with this landscape in oils. Please remember that no project I ever do looks anything like Ashley’s in this one or Matt’s.

A ways to go but here is where I am at.

Your landscape is looking so good. All the colors are very “congruent” (can’t think of word) I can’t wait for the finished piece. I love playing with the oil paint and hope to develop good control of it. I haven’t been able to work on mine but I hope it turns out at least decent since my grays are all different every time I mix a new batch. I will call mine “50 shades of gray” haha

Hi friends -

Happy me because I finally finished the Live Lesson - landscape oil painting. Mine is 8 x 10 and was completed on Strathmore Illustration Board for Wet Media. It was very nice to work on.

Beautiful landscape! How do you even paint so smoothly with oils? :star_struck:

Hi Sonia @Meme5

The illustration board made a big difference because the surface is completely smooth. I hate fighting the texture of canvas or linen. Also, I used fast drying medium which made the paint a little thinner and easier to spread. And then I used small brushes without very much paint on them.

Hello Terri (with 2r’s),

this is truly a work of art! You did a wonderful job as usual.

I really like Strathmore paper. They have a colored pencil paper that I had never tried. It was on sale for a small 6 - 9 pad for $4.75 apx.
and is really nice to work on. Honestly, I am surprised how much tooth that it has..

I tell you, it is a challenge I am having to fill in the tooth!!

Hope to finish mine soon. I really like how all the pieces presented here are the same but not. We are all unique artists with our own personalities.
