Dear Sys, when I first saw Luna, I thought: What is this dog concerned about? Then I read your lines that come with her. This is such a sad story, yet your present is so very soothing. I had tears in my eyes like Luna does. If I were your sister’s friend, I would so very feel lovedand embraced.

This is my first try at making a pastel painting “on my own”. So no tutorial, just from one of my reference pictures. I’m not 100% happy with it but I can’t pin point what could be improved (apart from my technique of course, which will improve with time). Let me know what you think, honestly!

Tyring to work a bit with texture on this one. It might be the worst nose I have ever done - but aside from that I think it went all right with the texture of the towel.

What a great start with a new medium, and nice that you used your own reference photo. The part I like the best is the branch and the reflection of that branch. That’s because you have a good range of values including lights and darks next to each other, creating great contrast.

I’m liking your texture on the towel. If you’d like a suggestion it looks to me like you’re using black for your dark values. With reference to the nose, try using dark brown instead and it would look more realistic. The same applies to the eyes.

I finished the old barn today. It was really fun and super educational. I learned alot. And I felt like things were going great - until the gouache came out. I went back to water colour to try to salvage it a bit.

It did not turn out OK; it turned out beautiful. You really nailed it in my opinion; it is truly a puppy face. There is no doubt that Luna will have a big impact on your sister’s friend.

Hello Sarah, I love the sense of impressionism in this work. Pushing the color hues in the foreground even though the sun is low in the sky is counter intuitive but delightful.

As a new Californian (I’m from Montreal, Canada, moved here at the end of 2023) and trying to find enjoyment with where I live, I decided to start a small series of local fauna and flora in pen and ink. Here are two studies I did for a Californian quail piece. I like working on toned paper, but for this one I preferred the rendering on the chest that I did on white hot press. I’ve done the pen and ink courses here and now I’m just trying things on my own. Also added a quick pastel study I did today during a Youtube live with a pastelist.

Since you mentioned you are doing a pen & ink series of drawings, I’m wondering if you have heard of the Zebra - Rubber 80 black oil-based ballpoint pen. There was a recent advanced Live Lesson at the Virtual Instructor earlier this year (drawing of a cathedral surrounded by a lot of trees) that used only that pen. It is absolutely incredible to use. Even if you don’t want to do that elaborate lesson, I suggest you give that pen a try. You can get it at Amazon, and it is very affordable. Sold only in box of 10 pens, $9.99 is current price.
