OH MY JIM @1kidneyJD

Where do you get your ideas? This is incredible. This is one you must send into Matt for the Members Minute.

Terri Robichon

Please tell me, do you like to see works in progress? I was thinking at first that I’d do this as a “line and wash” since there is a lot of that going on here right now. Then I remembered that I have a box of ballpoint pens that our talented friend Maki @Maki uses all the time, but I have yet to use. Besides that, the reference photo includes my cat as the focal point.

So it is now a ballpoint pen drawing. Learning mark making with this new media. The question is, when the ink drawing is done, should I add a light color wash? The shirts are basically yellow, red and blue (a primary color scheme).

I have one day’s work in on this so far. It is 9x12 on Canson 300# hot press watercolor paper.

And while I’m drawing, my husband is in the same room building a ship. We don’t do much talking because we’re both so focused on our own project. Thought you might enjoy this little view into my world.

Hi Terri,

I think your drawing is going to look fantastic! I cannot wait to see the end result. Very impressed with the detail and accuracy. What an amazing photo to duplicate. At this point I’m a little undecided on adding the wash……though could be a great addition…

Also love your share of your other half. A creative couple that’s for sure!
Love it, keep sharing as you progress please!

Thanks Michelle @MichelleB

I appreciate the feedback. Now that I have another day in on the shirts, I’m leaning towards no color. We’ll see.

Yo-ho-ho, Terri, a ballpoint pen drawing of a cat! :cat: :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
That’s my signature drawing. I’m so glad that you have chosen your furbaby as the subject for your first ballpoint pen drawing.
Personally I would love to see it completed entirely with ballpoint pen lines/dots. You will probably send it to the Member’s Minute, right? I’ve watched all the episodes and I know that there is no episodes dealing with artworks completed using only ballpoint pens but my own works. Once you complete this piece with a ballpoint pen, then it is included in the Member’s Minute history, it gives me sort of “welcome to the club” feelings. And Matt will definitely enjoy critiquing it! :tada:  :cat:

In the meantime here’s my ruined hydrangeas drawing. Was not too sad, actually I was not really bothered by the mess of the fixative huge drops :sweat_drops: splattered. So I just cut out the better looking chunk and will frame it small, if at all.
Originally 11x14, the chunk I will frame is 8 x 10.

Thank you, Terri! High praise indeed. I started just wanting to do the Statue of Liberty, I thought that would be challenging enough. Just kind of grew from there.
I do like to see works in progress, so please keep sharing.

Sonia, thank you so much. Your hydrangeas are beautiful.

Hi Sonia @Meme5

I love your hydrangeas, spatter/drops and all. You know many watercolor artists don’t consider their artwork done until they add spatters.

Terri Robichon

Hi Sonia - as always, thanks for your kind words of support. So far, so good but I’m saving the cat for last as I get a feel for how the pen works on my paper. I worked on it yesterday and hope to finish the shirts today.

Hi Maki, my good friend. I’m definitely liking it with just the pen and no color. Since I originally was going to do a line and wash I selected a 300# hot press watercolor paper by Canson. If I was to do it again, I think a different (less absorbent) paper may have been better. But I’m having fun, and of course I think of you the entire time I’m working on this and knew the cat was the perfect focal point. You have always been an inspiration to me. Stay tuned to see if it turns out okay.

The shirts are done, without any major disasters so far. The dresser is next, leaving the cat for last. I’ve decided to do the entire drawing with the ballpoint pen, and not do a color wash.

Hi guys, I’ve just been catching up on this thread which, I must say, is a brilliant one. It’s so nice to come in and see the wonderful artwork everyone’s been creating. I have been practicing my soft pastels, with some mixed results, but I’ve just finished this one which I’m reasonably happy with and would like to share with you all. It’s on 9 x 12” Pastelmat using a free reference photo by Wendy Corniquet. It’s apparently a clouded leopard which is an endangered species.

Hello Cathy, thank you for sharing but you forgot to post your work.
Artfully done.

Hi Cathy @cmhales7

You should be proud of this work. It is quite nice. I really love the colors used, the texture of the fur and the light on the leopard’s face. Please send this one in to Matt for the Members Minute. I always learn when I hear his comments. My “guess” is that he would suggest cropping a little off the left side so that the leopards head is not so close to the middle of the drawing. THANKS so much for sharing.

Terri Robichon

Thanks Terri for your always helpful suggestions. I did consider the positioning of the leopard before I started as I could hear Matt’s voice in my head but I couldn’t bring myself to contain her as I thought she needed more branch to stalk silently across, hunting her prey :joy: But I will send it in to Matt to see if we were right in our initial thoughts.
Cheers Cathy

Cathy @cmhales7,

What a beautiful leopard. You should be very happy with your soft pastel skills. I absolutely love soft pastels. Did you use only pastel sticks? The fur texture is amazing. Keep sharing your work!

Sonia

Well hello Terri @robichon!

The folds, shadows, patterns, cat’s fur outline are so very well done! Such an accurate rendering!!
