Thanks Sonia, yes mostly soft pastel sticks (Unisons, Art Spectrums and Terry Ludwigs) but a few pastel pencils for the details in and around the face.

Hi Sonia @Meme5

I was delighted to see your 4 yr old self portrait just now in the Members Minute. If other forum artists have not gone there yet, head on over to the weekly critique to see all the wonderful things Matt had to say.

There was also some helpful information on how to make the photograph of your artwork, look more like the actual artwork for sharing on the computer.

Working on another eye study focusing on skin tone. Still a long way to go because I was struggling for the longest with the tones until I realized that my device automatically changes to a yellower night shift screen view then to a cooler view in the daytime. Soooooo whenever I’d work on it depending on the daytime or night time I would keep “adjusting“ the skin tone, which in turn affected the shadows, then the shape of the eye, and the whole eye :astonished:

Here’s my halfway progress

Hi Sonia @Meme5

I’m blown away with how incredible this eye drawing looks. I can’t believe that you consider this only halfway done. I can’t see you needing to do much more, so I’ll wait to see it when you’re done.

I’m still working on this black ballpoint pen drawing. I changed my mind and decided I needed to keep working from top to bottom, so the cat was next. Now I’ve just got to do the dresser, followed by a review to see if I need any more adjustments.

Terri @robichon,

Thank you about the eye drawing. I would really like to get the skin tone and texture right. I think the eyeball itself is good as well as the values (at least when I turn the picture black and white). I would like to eventually draw a whole portrait with skin tones more accurate. I just will tweak the skin some more before I run out of took on the pastelmat.

Now, about your mesmerizing cat’s drawing, being the first time using ball point pen you know you got it figured out!
In case you haven’t noticed, I understand very little about measurements and composition (to me go hand in hand haha) but I sure am drawn to the soft cute cat and follow the shirts and all the things. So the whole drawing is looking perfecto!

Simply fabulous, Terri, this is exactly what we call “purrrrrrr-fection”!!! :tada: :cat:

Thanks Maki. @Maki
I definitely don’t have cross hatching mastered the way you do, but it’s going ok.

And here it is — the finished 9x12 black ballpoint pen drawing. The pen is the same as used by our friend MAKI @Maki , called a Zebra - Rubber 80. It comes from Japan but can be purchased on Amazon.

Thanks to all you fellow forum members. Your continued kind words of support have meant a lot to me.

I just love your pen drawing Terri, the detail is incredible as always but but it’s such a lovely composition with the cat in the cupboard with all the shirt sleeves… lovely :heart_eyes_cat:

Here’s the finished eye ( in my opinion). Even though I keep seeing more things needing correction, I tried to improve the skin texture.

Hi Cathy @cmhales7
Thanks so much for your kind words. I gotta say I’m totally surprised by how well this one turned out. I think it’s becoming one of my top 10 all time favorites. It’s all those shirts.

Hi Sonia. @Meme5

I gotta say that I have this one sitting where I can see it all the time, surprised at how well it turned out, and at times wondering how I did that. I guess I need to do more playing with this pen.

Ohhhh Sonia @Meme5

This eye drawing blows my mind. All of the details are so complex and well executed. Even the hairs of the eyebrow are amazing. Your observational skills have reached a new height.

So, Terri, how did you like the particular ballpoint pen? It is totally different from some traditional pens used for typical pen and ink drawings, isn’t it?
Zebra Rubber 80 can be used almost like a graphite or a pencil, which I find the strongest point of this pen. :+1: :cat:

Hi Maki @Maki -

This pen is nothing like anything else I’ve ever used. When slanting the pen to the side and using a light touch I was able to achieve a broad range of values. I ended us doing more of that and very little cross hatching.

When doing the really dark values I ended up getting impatient and using too much pressure. But I don’t think many would notice.

I want to try it on other types of paper. I was using 300lb Canson hot press watercolor paper because initially I thought I might do a Line and Wash drawing and I wanted a good paper that would stand up to moisture. As it turns out the paper was a little “to thick/soft” and occasionally I was picking up some fibers and ending up with a small black ink spot on the paper. The only way to get rid of these very little spots was to take my sharp pointed tool and scrap the ink (and some paper) away.

I will definitely be playing with this pen more. I liked it a lot.
