Mushroom getting sketchy

I luckily had the same brand of pencils, so it was easy to follow along. Really enjoyed this. I think if I was to do it again, I’d make the colors more saturated.

The moss is so soft. I love your mushroom!

Here’s my mushroom :mushroom: I used a masking fluid pen to preserve the remnants light color. So I was able to draw along the recorded lesson for a change!

I may go back and strengthen my colors. Yours look great. I tried to paint around the bumps and didn’t feel like finding my masking fluid so I just added gauche at the end.

Both are looking great!

Despite the alarming red color of these mushrooms, they are adorable! Nice work, Getting Sketchy friends.

@jenlen65

Well your gouache application looks great, i just happened to have the Masking fluid pen very handy. Same with the background color which was dried out on my little pallet

Actually this is the first watercolor painting that I have done that looks decent :hugs:

Hi @jenlen65

I have several brands of watercolor pencils but am waiting for delivery of Derwent Intense pencils (which I recently purchased) to try out on this drawing. I was supposed to get them last Friday, but now FedEx says sometime on Monday. I’ll post my drawing when it’s done. I’m planning to do mine as 5 X 7.

Your drawing looks great, and I especially like the shadows on the mushroom.

Thanks so much for sharing your work here.

Nice job Sonia @Meme5

I love the intensity of your reds and how you adjusted the value to conform to the shape of the mushroom cap and stem. The highlight is also perfect. But I really like that your background color is not such an intense blue. I plan to use Paynes gray (maybe with some added black) when I do mine. By the way, that painted watercolor background shows that you’re getting a feel for the watercolor. As always, practice, practice, practice. But be careful, because you may start loving it (watercolors that is).

I agree, the moss looks so soft. I went for a full saturated version. Not sure yet If I’m going to smooth out the background.

Hi Terri,
Thank you so much. I needed this project; I just came back from three weeks helping my daughter with her twins and was missing my art. This was the perfect little fun project to get back into it. Glad you like the bold colors.

Hi forum friends,

Finally, I have completed the Gettin’ Sketchy - mushroom. I made mine a 5x7 drawing. Also, it is not the 45-minute sketchy version, but a 3-day photorealistic version. As many know I love the detail, and by doing it this way I can use it as one of my county fair entries next August.

The paper is 100% cotton, 140# Hot Press watercolor paper by Fabriano. I used only the Derwent - Inktense Pencils. I just got my set and it was my first chance to use them. I love the colors but find that if activated and then allowed to dry, they are not permanent as many have stated. I tried and was able to reactivate them to a degree.

Your mushroom is not an exception to your masterful creations! No doubt it will get a winning ribbon at the fair!!

Thank you for sharing your experience about the inktense pencils, I have been looking at them, so I guess that puts them in my “maybe some day” list

Hi Sonia @Meme5

Your continued support and kind words mean the world to me. I think a lot of time beginners think they are the only ones that need a pat on the back or encouragement. But truth be told, we all value recognition when we work hard on something. You totally understand that.

Hi @Elina

Thanks for the kind words and confirming my findings about being able to activate Inktense pencils after they have been used and have dried.

Terri, this is amazing! :star_struck:

I am staring at this mushroom, completely captivated by the details (and colors).
Well done for being so patient and precise! The light on the head of the mushroom is so well captured! And all the grass, so many details there… and the stem … oh, well, the whole painting is just simply great!
