Hello, I am new to the community, having taken up art in retirement. Currently working through the Acrylic Live Stream.
Welcome! I started the acrylic course, value scale and the mug… I don’t know if acrylic is for me. I’ve done mostly the watercolours, pastels, pen and ink and the drawing classes. Acrylic behaves so differently to watercolour, for now I am not enjoying it… ![]()
I am in a similar place. I don’t like the short drying time of the acrylics and am hoping there will be a similar course in the future with oil paints. I do like making the smaller paintings for learning. I have gone through each of the other medium courses on the site except oil painting, and my best results are with graphite, colored pencil, line and wash, and dry and oil pastels. Still hoping I will be able to do oil painting.
WELCOME ZMAN!
Think you’ll love the community here and many of us are doing the live classes together! So, if you want to join in come Wednesdays live with Matt and Ashley at noon ET and Mondays with Matt at 9:00 pm ET ( I think) Always get mixed up with the times cuz I’m at Pacific time.
But its really rewarding and fun and we learn so much!
Therese
Nice to meet you. My name is Denise. I have been a member with Matt 14 + years. He is a great teacher. Both him and Ashley gave me a lot of new ideas as well as learning from them.
Hello Zman.
Welcome to the forum community. You will find a group of supportive people here who are willing to help when we can and answer any questions.
It is also so good to see you joining us in the Beginner to Acrylic course.
i have been using acrylics and find there is something to learn over and over.
Don’t give up on Acrylics, as you learn I am sure you will enjoy them too.
I do use a different brand of acrylics that may help you to enjoy them more. i use Golden Open Acrylics and they dry a little slower giving more time to work with your colors and if necessary wipe away something you don’t like.
Also remember that a benefit of acrylics is you can paint right over them when they are dry and they cover wonderfully.
See you on Monday!

Hello Sarah,
If you read my note to Zman you may be able to take advantage of the suggestions from my experiences with Acrylics.
I am glad to see you back posting here on the forum.
See you on Monday!

Hello Denise, Thanks for your note. My wife and I have been enjoying the VI membership for two years now. It has really made taking up art in our senior years fun and rewarding.
Hi @SarahP
Acrylics are a struggle for me too, and I’m finding it works better for me if I don’t use canvas. I don’t like fighting the texture of the surface. I prefer multi media board or 300# hot press watercolor paper. I like painting with watercolor too.

Hi James @Zman
There are oil painting lessons at TVI. I have done a couple of them myself and found them helpful. I think one was several tomatoes on a branch. I also liked the live lesson taught by Ashley of a French bulldog.
