New to Gouache - Live lesson horse race is challenging!

Hi everyone! Thus far I have been thrilled with my efforts on the Live, but this horse race is hard! I am assuming that is because a) it IS hard, and b) I have not done any of Matt’s prep courses which include gouache. Who can suggest preparatory courses to get me up to speed?

Hi @4Margaret

One of the reasons it is hard is that it’s relatively small for that much detail. I decided to do mine as 11 x 14. More surface to paint, but the details are more manageable.

Regarding lessons with gouache, there is one that Matt did of a bag of M&M’s. It was one of my favorite lessons.

Hello Margaret,

I agree with Terri on size. Also I find watching then going back to do the lesson helps and to take it one square at a time since Ashley used a grid.

I think you will learn to enjoy gouache. I find it has the best of all types of painting, watercolor and opaque mediums like oils and acrylics.

Hi Margaret, for prep courses to help you out with Gouache, I started off with the gouache lesson on the watercolor workshop, then the live lesson where Ashley did the still-life of drawing stuff, which gives you a lot of detail within a small space like the horse race. Terri also suggested the M&M Live Class, which I haven’t done jet, but looks really good. Hope that helps.

Hi Margaret, I am new to gouache too. Just got my first set of colors and it’s waiting until I am readdy to try it out. My plan is, to re-visit the water color course, but using gouache instead. Buddy
