Live Class Pee Wee the Peacock Colored Pencils on Black Paper

Have my Peacock traced and ready to go! I did trace it because I had a hard time seeing the graphite. I’m using black Legion Stonehenge 90lb paper.

Hi Sonia @Meme5 Finished the contour lines this afternoon. I used a 2h graphite oh & I am using a grid. No photo as you mentioned the sketch is very light. This is my first time using black paper Canson mi-reinters A-1 board? Giving the colored pencils another try. Using Prismacolor Scholar. Anxiously awaiting for Wednesday.

Can’t wait to see it finished.

Hi friends -

Minutes before the start of lesson two, I also finished my traced drawing using the white transfer paper.

I am planning to do this with pastel pencils instead of colored pencils.

Hello Sonia @Meme5 Terri @robichon & all who are following Matt in this journey of a peacock with colored pencils. It was a joy watching Matt start the process yesterday with 150 colors to choose from. I have a set of 24. Wish me luck.

Hi friends -

It’s early in the Peacock live lesson and I have already had to start over. The only black paper I had on hand was Stonehenge, cold pressed 300 lb watercolor paper. I figured it should have a lot of tooth and would work well.

I also decided to do this lesson with pastel pencils rather than colored pencils. I have used hot press watercolor paper quite a bit for colored pencils and pastels and figured the paper was a good choice.

As it turns out, that particular COLD pressed paper did not like my pastel pencils at all. I started with the birds eye and knew right away that I wasn’t going to fight this battle for the entire drawing.

Now I’m back to reliable PastelMat paper. I only have dark gray so I’ll be coloring in the dark shades - which is no big deal.

I only traced the bird’s body so far, then finished the head (from lesson two) and proceeded to get pretty far along on the body too).
I think I’ll finish tracing the rest of the background now, and wait until the next lesson or two before doing any more. Here is what I have with the second attempt.

Hello Terri @robichon

I’m sorry you started over. Do you plan to do anything with the previously traced one? I wander if clear gesso can be applied over the traced peacock on the watercolor paper?
Your new one is lookin really good! I started mine with the colored pencils on the eye only. I am waiting for Matt to post the recorded class to catch up because I can’t remember which colors he used where. I really want to get the look right with the color pencils. However, I will do one in soft pastels also.

Hi Sonia.

I haven’t thrown it away. It’s just sitting on my table. If you want it I will mail it to you.

Here’s my peacock that I forgot to post earlier. Maybe too little progress to show?

Sonia, that’s pretty much where Matt left off after lesson 2. I always like to see your progress photos so this is great. We can cheer each other on and maybe others will join us too.

Hello @HarleysMom

I can totally relate to the impatience part. Your peacock is looking very good and colorful.
I have much to learn about colored pencils on black paper, I must follow along to truly understand the process.

Sonia- I agree- I’ve done a lot of TVI colored pencil classes but still think that I may start this one over and go along with the class- but I am enjoying trying to apply what I’ve learned so far. I feel a little lost with the large amount of negative space at the bottom and look forward to see how Matt navigates that part, looking forward to it, actually. So many of you here are accomplished artists and while I try not to compare- it’s daunting to put my pieces up and you are all so kind!

Hi Lisa @HarleysMom

It’s a learning process for all of us and you are doing great. As I noted earlier, I’ve already started mine a second time. Sometimes that’s part of the learning process.

Hang in there and keep sharing, whether you continue to work with this version, or a new one.
