Hi @Lucy -
Really like what you have posted.
Anna Mason really is a great watercolor artist and teacher. Glad you did the pear. That’s one that I haven’t done myself (and I’ve done a lot of her classes).

Love the cartoons and the pear Lucy… You show a consistency in your art work and it is very appealing to me!

Wow Appelmoes these are exceptional wrinkles and creases! I’ve always found that difficult but yours are wonderful!

OMG, this guy is so absolutely adorable happy!!!
That’s so pretty and vibrant.
Love the eyes especially!
Oh, the color in the iris is beautiful, Elina!
@Meme5 wow, Sonia, this work is amazing!
@robichon Terry, it is a beautiful picture! Thank you for sharing.
Here is the reason why I have been silent for a while. I had to resort to gouache for the whiskers, because I filled the indentations up.
Wow, the fur is so well done. Very realistic.
@siffermus beautiful artwork😍
Pastel on pastelmat. The pastelmat was dark grey and I painted it with black gouache, then I also put down black pastel in the background.
Superb!!! Did you color in the whole paper in black gouache and used pastel on top? I am questioning, because I need to fix an indention on my dalmatian using PastelMat paper.

Hi Buddy! I painted the whole sheet with black gouache before I used any pastel. Then, after I’d put down the fish, I also used black pastel in the background which helped with the edges of the fish. I’ve done more
since the first photo. Here’s how it looks now.
Your fishes do look outstanding! Thank you so much for your answer, this really helps me out. See ya hopefully tonight, Buddy
Hi to all my forum friends. I haven’t been on the forum much lately. There just hasn`t been enough time. I’ll try to add a few comments now, but if I miss responding to any of you, please don’t take it personally. Many of us need to take a break on occasion for various reasons.
To @siffermus the cat drawing is beautiful. Figuring out how to get white whiskers is something I have struggled with for years. Your fix with gouache seems to have worked out well. I also enjoyed seeing your pen and ink practice drawing of what I believe are lemons (or limes). You’ve done really well obtaining a nice range of values which is difficult with ink pens.
@Elina thanks for your kind words about the graphite drawing of my husband at the eye doctor. He provides me with many possible reference photos. Since I take at least one photo every day, he is often my POTD (photo of the day).
@Bearinthegarden Twilah I’m looking at the pastel fish drawing of yours and loving the colors. I never heard of anyone applying (black) gouache to PastelMat, and then the pastels over that. How did that work for you, and would you do it again in the future? Why didn’t you just use black or dark pastels for the background by itself without the extra step of starting with Gouache.
And I think that catches me up with “most recent drawing or painting” posts.

Hi Terri! Life is a busy thing, isn’t it?
To answer your questions, I felt painting the PastelMat with black gouache worked for this project and I’d definitely do it again. I chose to start with a black gouache background instead of using black pastels exclusively for the background for several reasons.
1. Some of the fish are semi-transparent. I could put the fish on top of the gouache and know that the color I already had down for the background matched the color of the transparent areas within the fish.
2. Since the background was down first, I knew what values to use for the fish, since adding background later with pastel would alter how those values appeared.
3. I could maximize the benefits of considerations 1 and 2 without concern that my background would smudge, as it could have if I’d used pastel instead of gouache.
Putting down the fish first and adding dark pastel later didn’t seem like a good option because of considerations 1 and 2. After the fish were down, I did clean up the edges around them with black pastel. I hope this makes sense and is helpful to you and anyone else who is curious. Take care.
