Here is a demo from Bonny Snowdon that shows the principle of indenting. It’s a lot more difficult than it looks.
That’s so interesting! I think that’s a helpful tool to utilize to remove distractions in a photo, though I like your oil interpretation so much more than the AI one, even the simplified background!
I’m halfway done with my fair art. Deadline is fast approaching, so I’m dedicating most of my time to it this week. The detail on the foliage definitely takes longer than the blurred background, and most of the top half is background, so I’m hoping momentum speeds up with that portion
Hi Brooke @alongsidemom
I really love that someone besides me is working on artwork for the fair. Yours is looking really good!
Terri
Hi Forum Friends -
I’ve discovered that a couple of you are interested in clouds as a subject matter. I haven’t had a lot of practice with that so far, but here is a 9x12 watercolor painting that I just finished.
I used five colors to complete it: Neutral Tint, Paynes Gray, Winsor Blue, Yellow Ochre and Raw Umber.

I love this so much, I could stare at it all day! You really captured a lovely mood here with those clouds, the colors, and the whole
Cozy scene. It’s very calming.
Thanks so much Brooke @alongsidemom for the kind words. I think I will be keeping my eyes open for more opportunities to showcase clouds.
Terri
@alongsidemom,
This looks very cool! So realistic. Can’t wait to see more ![]()
Well Terri, in my opinion, painting clouds is super hard! But you nailed it!
Very nice!
Wow amazing amazing and amazing you always impress me with your art . How long have you been an artist
Hi @Creativejan and @Lucy
THANKS so much for taking the time to comment and for your kind words of support.
I took one drawing class in college back in the mid 1970’s when I was an Interior Design major. Then started trying to draw / paint on my own (with no instruction of any kind) around 1990. Didn’t get serious about my artwork until I became a member of The Virtual Instructor in Oct 2021. The only media I had used up until then was pencil and watercolor painting. So most of my serious drawing and learning has happened here.
Terri
Wow impressive Terri and I totally agree Matt has really taught me a lot
I will finish the background this morning, get it matted and then turn in for the fair is this evening. Nothing like last minute! But, I’m really happy with the butterfly. It’s actually a gulf fritillary, not a monarch, though it is sipping from milkweed, the monarch’s host plant.
Thank you so much, Terri!
@alongsidemom it is a outstanding picture!
The Lynx is a pastel pencil one on brown watercolor paper.(Jason Morgan Class)
The flower are coloured pencil drawings on white watercolour paper and on light grey Canson Mid Teintes paper. (Bpnny Snowdan Freebies)
Thank you Elina! Your drawings are lovely. I love those cat eyes and the fur! Nicely done
I finished in time! Here is it matted. My 12yo
daughter also entered one and I am so proud of her. It is the first time she tried the grid method and she drew one of our goats!
Hi Brooke @alongsidemom
One of the good things about submitting entries to the fair is it gives you a deadline and desire to do your best. I’m sure both you and your daughter will impress the judge. Be sure to let us know.
Terri
