@Meme5 wow! This is shading and going in values! Thank for sharing! It is inspiring and helps to recognise the power of values!
Hi Sonia.
This is really nice. Did you start over, or adjust what you had drawn before?
Terri
Hello my friend Terri @robichon
I adjusted the one I had started on. I couldn’t help it since I’ve had the charcoal on the desk. I did use some white charcoal too.

Another 5 x 7 drawing using Faber-Castell (Albrecht Durer) watercolor pencils is done. The paper is 300# Arches hot press watercolor paper. I’m still learning this media. A new thing I tried was to use the Faber-Castel water soluble graphite pencils for the darkest part of the tree trunk, and then I applied colors on top of that.
It’s NOT one of my favorites, but that’s okay.
Terri
Hi Terri,
Thanks for sharing your latest piece! I think it’s wonderful experimenting with different materials, we learn so much when exploring with new mediums. Using water-soluble graphite for the tree trunk sounds like a great way to add depth. Even if it’s not one of your favorites, it’s still a beautiful part of your creative growth.
I actually just ordered a set of water-soluble graphite pencils myself and am anxiously awaiting their arrival. I’m really inspired to try them after hearing how you used them in your piece.
Curious did you activate the water-soluble graphite? I’ve seen shading done over dried watercolor with a blackwing matte pencil and a blending stump. I was pleasantly surprised with the results. I tend to like softer shading that I can build up the tonal levels, I’m curious if the water-soluble graphite would allow that sort of application or if it’s a harsher line.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work!
Warmly,
Jessica
Great Job Sonia! I really like this one compared to the original you posted. What a difference it made working on it a little more.
Hi Jessica -
I activated the water soluble graphite and let it dry. Then I painted already dissolved watercolor pencil pigments over the top of the graphite. This did partially reactivate the graphite again so you need to be careful with the amount of water used.
I think it would be fun to do a project with just these water soluble graphite pencils.
Terri
This is dissolved pigment from the watercolor pencils.
I am working on this scarlet macaw . I am using acrylic paints . This is a large canvas that I was gifted by a neighbor before she passed away. It is on a 24x36 canvas . I am stumped how to finish it . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated . My areas of frustration are around the beak and the wings and the tail lack of connection. I drew this my self just from pictures off the internet that I could find .
I like those trees . Like how you have the. Texture in the bark. .
Eagle Eyes – 5x7 Watercolor on Wood Panel
This little painting was an experiment that I loved how it turned out! I used Daniel Smith watercolor ground to prep a wood panel so I could paint with watercolors right on the surface. It gave the piece a really cool texture and natural vibe that paper just can’t match.
The eagle came to life with bold colors and a serious “I see everything” kind of stare — which felt perfect for this piece.
Thinking of doing more like this, what do you think?
Jess
Hi Jessica
All I can say is WOW, very impressive.
Terri
Hi Jan @Creativejan
That’s a really BIG undertaking. Question … are you working from a reference photo ?
Terri
Looks amazing. Would love to see more in this style.
Terri @robichon
Lovely tree! I love the looking up perspective, so inspiring. Thank you for sharing your art with us. I hope to soon work on something with soluble graphite!

Hi @Jessica

Hi Sonia,
Thank you for your kind words. Watercolor is probably one of the hardest mediums to master. Learning water control helps tremendously! Using the correct paper makes a world of difference also. I have tried several and always resort going back to Arches watercolor paper. Painting on other surfaces other than paper also brings several new challenges since the watercolor behaves so differently. What helped me out a lot was just giving myself the freedom to explore and play with it in order to understand it better. Watercolors have a mind of their own and sometimes you just have to accept that and go with it that’s the beauty of them!
Jess
Hi Jessica.
Watercolors are actually one of my favorite media, and Arches 300# hot press watercolor paper is what I prefer because I like adding a lot of detail. It’s nice to have another watercolor artist here on the forum and I look forward to seeing more posts from you.
Terri
It really just photos of macaws on line .
Oh my gosh this is awesome . Would love to hear about painting on wood . I was gifted some pieces %.
