Hello Terri, thank you so much for your kind words!
I’ve already decided to title the new drawing using your photos as “Terri’s groove” after Marcus Miller’s song titled “Nikki’s groove”. This is because the artwork will be something capturing the abundance of liveliness, pleasure, and dynamism in your photos. I already know that the composition prep phase will be so exciting.
For this artwork, I am also going to utilize a new technique which has long intrigued me since I saw some sample drawings years ago. This will make the actual drawing phase very interesting as well.
This new project will start in July and I am going to share the progress here
This is so exciting Maki. It’s like waiting for Christmas to see what you do.
I did pull out the pen information and will post that info now.

PS. I think I know what my first major pen drawing will be with the Rubber 80 ballpoint pen, but won’t be starting it until August or September so that I can use it for the 2025 local county fair.
Regarding the pens that Maki uses, I purchased mine online from Amazon last November. They are still available and come in a box of 10 for $13. (They were then shipped to me by Amazon - Japan.)
To clarify, they are “ballpoint pens” and can achieve an incredible range of values depending upon the pressure used.
I think you’d really like them and as far as art supplies go, very affordable.
Thanks for the info! Your work is so detailed, I’m surprised it doesn’t take you longer than it does to finish a piece. I will check out the paper and pens!
Your portrait of Missy is great! (water based oils…I’m still contemplating water color). Thanks Sonia for adding the finishing touch to Terri’s portrait! I love it!!
My latest, eclipse from last April. Photo from a teacher friend. Yellow maize pastelmat with pastel sticks, panpastels, amd pastel pencils. Caran d’ache chinese white pastel pencil is the brightest white for glow or lightest highlights
Hi Terri,
This is gorgeous! I love the texture of the fur and the eyes are beautiful!
I also just used my cat as a model … he tried to look very fierce despite being the most cuddly cat ever
The bark textures piece is somehow “thumbnail” size indeed, and I really don’t know why the image is so small. When I scanned the original drawing, I did not change the resolution level at all, so it should be much larger.
Anyways, these are the enlarged version of each of the texture drawings:
The quake happened somewhere far away from my local town. Thank you for caring about me.
Also, thank you for caring about my mom too!
I saw her at the end of May at the hospital for a checkup, and she looked very well.
She even showed me a smile when I said “good morning!” to her.
The doctor we saw checked her surgical scar and confirmed that it was almost disappearing.
Very glad to hear that!
@robichon Thank you so much for taking the time to share the purchase information while you’re in the midst of the last-minute prep for the summer fair!
Hi Bill, the strongest point of this ballpoint pen is the softness that you can achieve when you draw with extremely light pressure. I think you can see that in this drawing:
Matt once said in one of the MM’s episodes focusing on my drawings that the lines drawn using this pen looked almost like graphite. Indeed, this ballpoint pen uses black ink but when you use it with light pressure, you can draw “grey” lines. So it is very easy to achieve a great range of values.
Hope you enjoy some pen drawings with this one!
Thanks for that info, Maki. I just ordered a box of pens today. Seeing how versatile they are, I can’t wait to give them a try. I also ordered a pad of the paper you use.

Hello Robichon;
Please tell what brush you to get such fine strokes on your whiskers?
I’m painting with water-mixable oil paint also & seem to struggle getting the right brush for the task I’m trying to accomplish.
Thank you
