Live Class Pee Wee the Peacock Colored Pencils on Black Paper

It’s looking good Lisa. Thanks for posting your work.

@Meme5 I think it looks really good- we know how many “phases”’ the artwork goes through before it’s complete. I tend to work toooooo tight and then can’t undo it- yours looks loose and full of potential with good bones. Sharing work in progress helps to see everyone’s process, I think it’s a wonderful addition to watching the actual lesson. Pee Wee is looking at me from the wall- does anyone else put their art in a spot to look at it frequently so you can find areas that need adjustment? I know Teri does, I saw her comment about that recently- I did it by accident and now make it a practice.

@robichon Terri, as always, thanks for your encouragement. My golden feathers were a bit of a struggle and I would like than to be closer to the reference color so l look forward to seeing what Matt will do. I never feel that colored pencil on black gets “bright” enough, and I’m sure that’s my own inexperience.

I would just like to add, this community means a lot to me, and I am so grateful to have discovered TVI and all of you on my art journey!

Lisa.

Hi Lisa @HarleysMom and Sonia @Meme5

Lisa it is so good to have you active on the forum, and especially here on the live lesson thread. And to answer your question, yes I prop the artwork I am working on across the room from me so that I can see it from a bit of a distance to evaluate things that need more work. It also helps to take a photo and put it on the computer, and then you see more things that need to be adjusted.

Sonia I am so grateful for our private emails that gave me some direction regarding the struggles I was having with the Peacock feathers on the body, specifically since I’m doing mine with pastels. I ended up erasing as much of the body that I could with my kneaded eraser and spent several more hours working on drawing it again. My goal was to come up with a blend of what I saw in TVI - AI generated reference photo, and what a photo of a real Peacock looks like. I even went back and better defined the structure of the beak and added a touch of brown to the eye.

Attached for others to use if they like is the photo I’m liking of an actual Peacock. I’m also attaching the side-by-side before and after of Peewee Peacock so you can see how it has changed. Not perfect, but I’m feeling a lot better about moving on to the tail feathers that are closest to the body.

Notice how much smoother (more refined) the feathers on the body are on this image. Also take a look at the colors of the tail feathers and the structure of the beek. It helps me to draw when I better understand the structure of the bird. The AI image grabbed me with delight with the bright colors and contrast which I will still try to replicate, but the feathers on the body just looked off and I couldn’t figure out why. To be honest, most people won’t even be able to tell that I changed anything.

Terri @robichon, the changes turned into such a lovely very natural outcome! Thank you for sharing!

Here’s my Peewee the Peacock. This is as far ahead as I dare to go since the blending of the body feathers can be more forgiving than the tiny clumps on the head are especially since they are in light layers (:crossed_fingers:t3:at least in my mind). Besides I have my electric eraser close by lol

Terri @robichon

I really like the reference picture of the peacock you posted, however, I am so extra super glad that our AI Pee Wee doesn’t have so many rows of golden feathers  as the other one

My progress so far.

A note on the pencil “Orchid” - in 2023 Prismacolor replaced two of their colours Lilac PC956 and Lavender PC934 due to pigment availability. They were replaced with Amethyst PC1104 and Orchid PC1105. I have the older set and I was scratching my head looking for the 1105, I eventually googled to find the name and saw that it was one of the replaced colours.

Terri,

I saw the changes immediately. Values as Matt says makes all the difference!

I’ve started but already am behind with this one, as usual.

Thanks for the other information too. As you know, reading on the computer is difficult for me so, something I did in High School, I read the first sentence of each paragraph and my mind fills in the blanks as I skim.

Teri

Hi Sonia -

I’m glad also that our reference photo doesn’t have any more features. This is challenging enough.

Trying to catch up but this is what I have accomplished so far.

Softened Peewee’s feathers some, as well as added indigo and 90% cool gray

Hi Sonia @Meme5 -
Pee Wee is looking great with the softened feathers. You even finished all the assigned homework. I’m so glad we’re both working on this at the same time. I’m waiting for my new pastel pencils to be delivered today before going any further with mine.
