@robichon Yes, tjh colours are powerful
. Great picture!
Wow - this is amazing! Love the colours on this. Just wonderful tulips.
Thanks so much @siffermus . I’ve really been enjoying your posts here as well.
Terri
I think your sketch looks better than the reference!
What a fun perspective, and great colors!
Looks like a tree in the garden of Eden! :slight smile:
That is so real Terri…colors are perfect cuz I just brought in a red tulip to see the insides of them which are also so
beautiful
I’ve been trying to work on circles or rings… was practicing because of the ring on the trumpet we are doing in the Live class.
Really find it hard make things round and get values in the right places too!
Was fun though! ![]()
HAPPY EASTER everyone!
Here is my most recent piece of artwork. It’s a 6x6 watercolor pencil painting/drawing on Arches 300# Hotpress watercolor paper. This was a Gettin’ Sketchy project, but I used a different media and asked ChatGPT to give me a different background. I also spent a lot more than 45 minutes on it because I wanted it to be a more finished piece of artwork.
This one is also significant because I now have 21 (out of 42 possible) fine arts entries completed for my upcoming county fair in early August 2026. Half-way there. That means I have 17 weeks to do another 21. Don’t know if I’ll make it - but I’m definitely trying.

Well it has been quite some time since my last post.
This one was done with H graphite pencil, hard charcoal pencil, compressed charcoal stick, white charcoal, and a little carbon. Strathmore toned gray paper (first time with toned paper) 400 series 9x12 80lb.
I welcome any and all feedback as it has been over a year since I last put pencil to paper.
Thank you,
Jim
Terri, I have no doubt that you will reach your goal. I am always impressed with your work.
Professional.

I have sketched these two duck in watercolour, and I have been wondering how to make bright white light reflections on the water. Does anyone have any advice on how to get bright reflections of white? I have tried white gouche, but that didn’t work.
siffermus: Adorable ducks! I would try to darken the values around the areas that you want to pop out as more white. The contrast will then make them appear more white. In other words, darken all of the water more except for the areas that you want to appear as the reflections. In nature the water is most likely a lot darker in value I think. Try it on a scrap paper and see if it gives you the effect that you are looking for. Hope this helps.
Hi @1kidneyJD
I’m always delighted to see your work. This is incredible and I love the range of values. Keep drawing my friend.

Hi @siffermus
Watercolor is one of those mediums where you have to think about the whites BEFORE starting so that you can leave that portion of the paper untouched as you paint everything else. Trying to deal with it after the fact will never look good. It’s just the nature of the beast.
That being said, two things you can try to improve the situation. First, paint the areas - around where you want the white - a darker color so that you are creating contrast. That will make the lights look lighter. The other thing I have tried on occasion in small areas is to take an exacto knife and gently scratch off the top of the paper, leaving the white core. But you will not be able to do this if you already applied gouache.
But it’s okay because this has been a great learning experience for you. After all it’s just paper and paint. Thanks for asking the question and sharing your work.
Terri
I have a new painting to share. It’s an 8x10 using colored ink on Arches 300# hotpress watercolor paper.

This time I have sketched with gouache. I use the HIMI gel gouache and as cheap student grade Hot Pressed paper from Fabriano. I plan on doing a lot of sketching with gouache and watercolour and didn’t wan’t to bankrupt my self in pricy professinal grade paper.
I am a bit in struggle with the nose and with fine lines to create good looking fur…but shaping pastel pencils is special, they break so often
.I a honestly looking forward to my ordered shapeners!
Those look great! I love the colors.
Peter
Wow that is so vibrant looks like you could pick one off the page
