Man, I struggled with this one. I know it’s really bad. It Luminance pencils and Lightfast on Clairefontaine Paint On. I used OMS solvent for it.
The skill on this thread is daunting- but here is what I’m working on. It’s been challenging to make the rocks look like rocks. I don’t consider any part completed yet. This is colored pencils on pastel paper from Strathmore, toned beige. My photo reference is from Pixabay.
It looks really great so far. Can’t wait to see the finished result. Rocks are so difficult to draw!
The nose is really, really well done.
Hi to my forum friends -
I had very little time for artwork this past week, but did manage to start these two little projects. Both are 5x7 in hopes they won’t take forever to finish. For the tulip I’m using watercolor pencils on Illustration Board for wet media. The acrylic painting of a ladybug is on 300 lb hot press watercolor paper with a base coat of gesso. Hope to finish both this coming week.

Hi Lisa @HarleysMom
You’re doing great on this one. It’s the practice that is so important in raising your skill to the next level and you are well on your way. Thanks for sharing and let us see your finished drawing.

Hi Sys @siffermus
I want you to know that this beautiful image is NOT really bad. You are understanding the various fur textures that this animal has, and the moist glistening eyes are wonderful. Leave it alone for a while and then come back to it. I’m sure you’ll better appreciate that this is actually quite nice. I think we are all too hard on ourselves. Please keep up the practice and sharing. We are here to support you.

Hi Elina @Elina
I so love your enthusiasm and willingness to give pretty much anything a try. These colors are so clean and colorful. I think it won’t be long before you are mastering this media.

@siffermus Sometimes we bring ourself in struggling and doubting situations… It is a good idea to put it away for a while
The Koale looks really beautyfull, wet nose, shining eyes, friendly vibrations, I like the fur and the background… .
@robichon
thank you for your kind and motivating words.
@robichon they already looking interesting and deep. The tulips smoothness is touching.
I am looking forward to see the finished pictures.
I like that a lot, the fur, the wet eyes , the colors, looks great thanks for posting. Ron
Here is my finished (I think) seagull.
Terri, I’m excited to see your finished pieces- I am sure they will be wonderful.
This whole thread blows me away!
@TLP /Teri Faber Castell India Ink Pens Didn’t know they existed!
@rleeelliott Excellent Dip pen and wash on the old building! Which nibs are you using? I have one fine (Zebra Comic G) and one super fine (Maru) that nearly cuts the paper if I add pressure which I use for extremely fine lines. I really like Pen and ink wash, especially whehen combined with watercolor. Some clash between sum and pen and ink and a dab of watercolor drawings I’ve seen have been amazing. I’m just not at that level yet, I take too many breaks and don’t’ stick with it.
@Brenda Amazing, as always! Very nice watercolors and great texture showing the ice cubes withe the wet/wet technique! My curved glasses usually don’t match for symmetry but your upside down method might do the trick! Where are you getting references for drawing per day? That sounds like something that would motivate me, finding things I want to drw is difficult, search engines usually show me finished art pieces andAI or digital art and not pictures like search used to.
@pottsie Great work with the daughters, human form is something I struggle with, I’m still in the beginner stages again after getting better for a while I slid backward.
@barbaradubovsky How did the Pastel Ground work out for you compared to pre-sanded paper or untreated paper? I just got some and am about to give it a shot once I find a suitable subject. Right now I have 9x12" watercolor paper wit a coat of Pastel Ground and am stretching it with masking tape to get the wrinklies out and waiting for it to fully dry out. I taped all the edges overlap about 1/2" with masking tape and after 10 minutes (maximum wrinkle/stretch) I taped it down to an art board to pull it flat again and now letting it dry a couple days to be absolutely sure the board underneath is dry too. Worried about the masonite board I use as it can fall apart with water.
@Meme5 Excellent work with pastels! This thread is really motivating me to find some subject, I think a building would be the safest right now for my skill level.
@Maki Still putting out amazing work! Are these all still ballpoint pen drawings?
This Bear loves messing around with mixing media. This is Staedler pens and Inktense pencils and Inktense blocks on mixed media paper. The process of doing this one felt strange and uncomfortable, I think because I prefer to work loose, but these media don’t play loose. Anyway, I made myself keep going and this is what I got. Critiques are welcomed.
@ThatOtherGuy , I subscribe to Emily Olson Art watercolor website. There is a daily challenge which includes a sketch before painting. I love the site and am in my 2nd year there.
Brenda
I really like your piece. I have yet to try inktense pencils and such, perhaps I’ll give them a try. Are they water activated?
Sonia Alonzo
I’ve been slowly working on this lion with soft pastels sticks, pastel pencils, nupastels, and pan pastels. It’s 16 x 14 on brown canson velvet. Still developing and loving every second of the process!
Thank you. Yes, Inktense pencils are water activated ink pencils, but I’ve noticed that individually pencils behave very differently from one another. Some pencils are easily activated and spread a lot, others barely move and seem more like graphite when you put water on them. Also, some of the inks are slightly re-activated with more water, but most of them stay put, so you have to remember which does what to get the effects you want. I didn’t like that part. I like my materials to behave uniformly.
Interesting information. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts.
